Saloons raided by Marsha Willis on Sunday morning
Marsha Willis raided Rettich and Anderson saloons near the E. and T. depot. Rettich faced charges for violating the Nicholson law after beer and whiskey were found. Anderson also faced Nicholson law charges. Willis arrested four drunks Sam Willey Charles Hammond Thomas Purcell and John Skinner with two paying fines and two jailed.

Former resident Morris hosts large family dinner near Carlisle
Marcellus E. Morris of Sarcoxie Missouri visiting relatives in the county received a big dinner Sunday August 18 at Mrs S J Hart home four miles southwest of Carlisle. Fifty six relatives attended with a long 18 foot table set in the yard. Attendees included M C Morris of Missouri Oliver Pittman and William Ridge of Sullivan and J E Sidebottom of Center Point. Morris is a son of William Morris a former county resident and a grandson of Dr William McGowen. He is a Missouri school teacher with 27 years in the field.

Jamison No 5 Oil Well Planned Near City
A new Jamison No 5 oilwell on the Jamison farm two miles west of town will start soon. It will sit about 200 yards southwest of Jamison No 4, the county's first producing oil well. A 250 barrel oil tank was erected at No 4 to receive its output.

Beasley Trial Set for September Term
The trial of George R. Beasley the Linton saloonkeeper jailed in Sullivan on a wife murder charge will occur in the September term of Greene circuit court. A special grand jury will be convened the first week of September and Beasley likely to be indicted for murder in the first degree.

Clerk's mistake prevents death by own action
P F Sullivan of Detroit attempted suicide in Scott Brothers hardware store after purchasing a revolver. Clerk Elmer Thomas loaded the gun, then Sullivan aimed at his head and fired twice. Walter Scott intervened and removed cartridges. a rim fire vs center fire error saved his life. Sullivan, described as mentally distressed, was taken to Detroit residence after the incident.

Civil War Veteran Robert McElfrath Dies at Home
Robert McElfrath who moved from Rockville to this city died Sunday morning at his son William MecElfrath's home from bladder trouble. He served as a private in the 48th Pennsylvania during the Civil War. The remains were taken to Rockville Monday for burial.

Sheriff Breaks Up Gambling At Merom Bluff
Merom August 27 Sheriff Walters led deputies to a bluff near Merom where two gambling games were halted. George Smith operated a nickel-to-dollar ring game while Isaac Jones ran a slot machine with youths 16 to 21. Both men pleaded guilty but lacked funds for $25 fines and costs, and were transported to Sullivan jail.
