Death of Alexander Jester ends one of era's famed murder trials
Aurora Missouri reports the death at Cushing Oklahoma of Alexander Jester alias William A Hill aged over 90. He was tried at New London Missouri in July 1900 for the 1871 murder of Gilbert W Gates brother of John W Gates. The case, built on circumstantial evidence, captivated the Mississippi Valley as Jester fled after escaping a Mexico Missouri jail and later lived under a false name. He was acquitted after five weeks as the state could not prove Gates was dead. He died August 7 at his daughter's home and was buried in Shawnee Oklahoma.

Prisoner capture leads to broken nose in Indiana town
Oscar Williamson arrested Robert Carpenter after a struggle in Farmersburg on August 20. Carpenter, wanted for assault, fled but was pursued and captured. Williamson suffered a broken nose during the chase but continued pursuit and secured the arrest. Additional local notices include deaths of Charles Garrison Halberstadt and Afton Wendell Bennett, injuries to Hartley E. Bennett, a grocery sale, a move to Northern Michigan, and a Christian church missionary convention set for September 26-27.

Birthday Dinner Honors 68th Birthday for Local Resident
J. R. Linn, resident one mile north of the Little Giant mine, was surprised with a noon dinner last Saturday for his 68th birthday. About 110 neighbors and friends attended and presented him with useful gifts. Linn, born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina in 1839, served as a Confederate soldier and has been a prominent county resident since 1868.

Davis brothers reunited after fifty years in Patoka search
Clinton Davis of Rankin Illinois visits his sister Mrs Calvin Johnson and his niece Mrs Byron Ferree and locates his brother George Davis in Patoka. George enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the war and, after no word from home, lost interest in returning home. He moved south after the war and lived there until relocating to Patoka about a year ago.

Bedford August 20 Hervey T Nichols formerly Western Union operator at Sullivan arrived to run the Bedford office but resigned under pressure from striking telegraphers. Nichols, a strike breaker, showed little enthusiasm for the task and left Radford after local union members confronted him, ending his attempt to open for business.

Horace Dickerson a young employee at the Davis House is jailed awaiting trial on larceny. Burke Eaton accuses him of stealing $11 from the Davis cash box with evidence. Dickerson aided in cleaning the cafe earlier and fled after the sack money disappeared around 6 am. He was arrested on the northbound interurban and returned to Sullivan by Marshal Willis.
