John Borders jailed on charges of shooting Harry Houpt unleashing a gun attack that left a bullet lodged in Houpt’s lung and threatened his life. Authorities report the incident as a severe violence case with ongoing legal proceedings.
The shooting occurred near the United Brethren Church in Jackson township near Willfred after a family quarrel. Harry Houpt, 32, is in a Terre Haute hospital with a back and lung wound. John Borders, 27, is jailed on a murder intent charge. Borders was hiding in a field and was captured by deputies after help from Borders’ brothers-in-law.
Four people were injured when a Ford car driven by Harry Shaw rolled over twice on a sharp road turn four miles northwest of the city. Passengers Miss Hallie Ladd of Merom Raymond Widner of New Lebanon and Miss Elizabeth Phillips of New Lebanon suffered injuries. Phillips lightly. The party had been returning from a Hutsonville picnic and were brought to Sullivan for treatment.
A special meeting appointed Mayor Calvert J W Lindley Charles D Hunt and Paul Poynter to represent the city at today hearing before the State Public Service Commission in Indianapolis on Wabash Valley Electric Company proposed rate increase.
Heirs of Marshall Bailey deceased offer land for sale September 4 1917 at the premises. The 105 acres are shown in parcels 40 40 10.5 and 14.5 acres and then as a whole. Located five miles northeast of Sullivan and five miles southeast of Shelburn near church school and good roads. Improvements include a seven room house a large barn and other buildings. Most land cultivable with three to four acres not suitable.
The annual Sullivan County Teachers Institute will begin September 3 at the city gymnasium for a five day session. Dr. Horace Ellis State Superintendent will address attendees. Richard Park county superintendent will oversee the program with lectures by Dr. Charles Calvert Ellis Emma Colbert and other educators.
Donald Dushome, superintendent of Clinton schools, visited the county infirmary and praises Albert Watson for maintaining the institution in excellent condition in a letter received this week.
Hudson Howard, passed for the aviation corps at Terre Haute, left Sunday for Fort Bliss Texas for training. He is the son of Mr and Mrs W W Howard of Haddon township. He has lived in St Petersburg Florida for several years and worked as a barber here for the past two summers.
A Fairbanks township report notes high yields from tiled fields. Foutz Bros on Charles Riggs' farm produced 800 bushels of wheat from 18 acres, and Carl and Percy Lester on Edgar Strain's farm harvested 810 bushels of oats from 13 acres.
Former Gill township teacher Edna Vigus writes from Colorado that she enjoys the West and has been elected to the top eighth grade position in Montrose County at a salary of 100 dollars per month. She will teach at Clathe Colorado.

Residents west of the city report a half mile of road two miles west of town improved while adjacent highway work on nearby farm land owned by a politically prominent figure remains idle. Four teams and laborers spent two days on the improved strip, which is now in good condition, prompting inquiries about the broader road program and its political ties.
Robert Linkenhoker son of Mr and Mrs J A Linkenhoker recently completed aviation training in Champaign Illinois and is visiting before active duty as a first lieutenant. Dr Garland D Scott now in Fort Harrison will soon be captain. Russell Thompson coast artillery lieutenant at Fortress Monroe is visiting before duty at Fort Wright near New York. Lt Emil McCoy trained at Fort Harrison visits family before becoming cantonment instructor in Louisville. Capt John Robert Hume mobilization camp Syracuse senior medical officer Twenty third U S infantry visits family before being sent to France. He fought Mexican cavalry at El Paso last winter and was born in southern Sullivan county.
Dr. Paul Higbee of this city, former lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps at Fort Harrison Indianapolis, has received a captain’s commission in the new U S Army. He has trained at Fort Harrison for months and becomes an instructor. He leaves soon for duty somewhere in the United States. Higbee, son of Dr. Geo W Higbee, has practiced medicine locally for years and is the county’s only Sullivan County boy to attain a captaincy.
Civil actions listed include Cyrus E. Davis and Ella L. Yakey against James Wheeler and Zora Wheeler for quiet title. Additional suits involve Elza Z. Lindley versus Cora M. Lindley for divorce and cases of New Union Lumber Co. against Josie Porter and Joseph Porter to foreclose a mortgage. Clara Denney sues Dan Denney for divorce.
Noble Campbell, stepson of Howard Briggs of Greencastle and relative of the late Murray Briggs, opens a shop in the Citizens Trust building to manufacture glass signs and house numbers. He is noted as an old printer who once worked on the New York Times with Otto Mergenthaler, the inventor of the linecasting machine.
William Barbre of this city was arrested last week at Terre Haute and is in jail there on a larceny charge. Barbre has served two terms from this county on larceny charges.
A. H. Owens of Blackwell Oklahoma is visiting his brother Alonzo Owens.
County road crews extend gravel filling campaign beyond Sullivan into neighboring Clay County. A Jackson township teamster placed gravel in bad spots and was instructed to haul it to the worst sections, leading to gravel being skidded back across county lines by the time the job progressed.
Irving M. Eastman and Miss Ruth Nash were wed Saturday night by Rev. John McD. Horne in West Washington Street. The couple will visit Eastman’s parents in Attica, N Y, before he enters the new national army around September 4. Eastman, a piano tuner for seven years, is a Boston Conservatory graduate active in local lodges. Mrs. Eastman is from the Nash family and manages Springer and Gouchenour millinery store in the city.
The Fred F. Bays Coal Company filed articles of incorporation with $30,000 capital. Officers are Fred F. Bays president, Lee F. Bays vice president, and M. L. Bays secretary. A new mine is being sunk near Linton, with the Monon building a switch to the mine.
County Auditor Frank M. Daniels announced the total expenses for 1917 amount to 102 thousand 535 dollars. The largest cost item totals 58 thousand 275 dollars covering public buildings bridges poor elections and salaries of county commissioners.
Uncle Hardy Osborne an 82 year old Civil War veteran and former U S marshal traveled from Fairbanks township to Sullivan to pursue filing an affidavit against a local minister accused of treasonable and anti American utterances. He is renowned in the northern part of the county for his vigor and activity. He hunted trapped and worked fields recently and is famed for swift feet and a past in arresting rebel sympathizers during the war.
George T. Gritton of Parma Idaho formerly of Jackson township sells a 77 acre Jackson township farm and buys a farm near Parma. He reports 60 bushels of wheat per acre and 69 bushels of barley on his Idaho farm. Mrs. Gritton is daughter of Col. A P Asbury of Farmersburg.
Miss Bertha Mason a Sullivan Telephone Company collector married George A Young musician from Pittsburg Saturday at Vincennes. They will reside in Indianapolis.
A convention of Baptist churches from Sullivan Knox Martin Daviess and Greene counties meets in Washington on August 28 and 29. Rev I Long of this city is on the program for two addresses.
Theo dore Thompson pit boss suffers serious burns after ignited gasoline in the Peerless mine house. About thirty gallons stored inside. He is cared for at his Hymera home. Hosea Wheat, 27, badly injured when a car jumped the track pinning him near the mine pump. John Bedwell, 22, crushed chest and three broken ribs after being kicked by a mule. he is at his Hymera residence.
The exemption board will mail notices to 375 more conscripted men to report for examination next Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. Examinations will cover numbers 749 through 1123. So far about 180 men have been accepted in the county. The full county quota is 247.
George French of this city celebrated his 79th birthday with a Sunday dinner for about 200 friends and relatives at the city park. The 80 foot table overflowed with seasonal fare including forty cakes as Rev. J T Scull offered thanks. The oldest guest, James McCrory of West York Illinois, was 89. Attendees included brothers Vivian Pace Fort Pickens Florida and Rex Pace Jefferson Barracks Missouri. A group photo was taken by R A Plunkett.
Thursday marked the 78th birthday of Jacob F. Hoke a Sullivan resident honored with a family dinner at his home. A county native he long led local business affairs and served as president of Sullivan State Bank before retirement. His brothers William John and George attended from nearby towns.
Harold Rich son of Chief O. R. Rich from this city and a group of boyfriends were bruised and cut when their car left the road near Linton at 3 oclock Sunday morning. Newt Botts brought the group back here. others named were Will Handley Paul Davis and Chester Smith.
Thomas Hancock of Philadelphia died Thursday after a two year illness with consumption at his home. He lived ten years in Philadelphia with his wife Gertrude Bell formerly of this city and is survived by a child. Burial took place in Philadelphia.
George Greator of this city, who left the deputy county surveyor post to join the army engineering corps, is now serving in France. His father, George V. Greator of Vincennes, has received a cablegram confirming his arrival in France, and Mrs. Greator and their young daughter remain here.
Claude Phillips of Turman township was fined ten dollars and costs in Justice Lester's court on Monday afternoon for killing a robin. The arrest was made by deputy game wardens.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snavely and family have returned from a weeklong visit with relatives at York Illinois.
The board approved numerous exemptions and referred many cases automatically to the district board for review. The actions signal broad use of exemptions and a shift of workload to higher authority.
The local exemption board in Sullivan County, now located near the Sullivan State Bank, approved many exemptions for dependents last week. Exemptions must be approved by the district board in Vincennes and claims based on vocation must be filed within five days. The list includes Herbert Pigg, Arthur McNabb, Guy Phillips, Walter Schriver, Clarence Smith, Charles Risinger, Curtis Flinn, Aquilla Eddington, Grover Drake, Clyde Nixon, John Smallwood, George Russell, James Cottingham, John Phelps, Omer Keller, Warnie Hutchison, Joe Ferman Buck, Everett Caton, John Henry McBride, Forest Reavis, Carl Rogers, Ernest Davis, Otto Shields, and many others with wives and children noted.
