William J. Bryan spoke to a crowded Sunday audience estimated over ten thousand at Chautauqua. The event drew attendees from regional communities seeking political and civic discussion amid weekend programming.
The Merom Chautauqua draws crowds as William H. Taft prepares to speak on Our Worlds Relations while Miss Jeannette Rankin of Montana will deliver the closing address. Bryan earlier addressed over ten thousand attendees on suffrage and prohibition with emphasis on Wilson’s leadership.
Mrs C W Cooper of Merom sustained serious injuries when a touring car and a roadster collided five miles south of Terre Haute on the Prairieton road Wednesday afternoon. The party included Mr and Mrs Cooper their son Dr F Cooper and daughter Miss Whiting Cooper. Two Terre Haute traveling men rode in the roadster. Both cars were damaged and Mrs Cooper later worsened and returned home with the family.

A letter from Gilbert W. Gambill criticizes a Sullivan road report and reveals personal efforts to improve a dirt stretch west of the city. He outlines months of persuasion, paid labor, lumber, sewer work, rails for ditches, and a plan to oil the section if affordable.
A county statement lists townships in Sullivan County paying for sheep killed by dogs in 1915 and 1916. It shows the number of sheep killed per township and the total payout by each township, totaling 2 525.70 over the two years.
Red Cross work rooms at Mrs. John C. Chaney home on North State Street have been active all week with Sullivan volunteers. Three shipments sent, one more nearly ready. Articles include bath robes pajamas sweaters jackets wash rags foot rugs and fracture pillows. Mrs Zoe Bays praised in Indianapolis News by Mrs Martindale. More workers welcome.
Dr. W. A. Bailey of this city was taken to the Good Samaritan hospital at Vincennes Saturday where on the same day he underwent an operation for the removal of an abscess. He is now getting along fine and will be able to return home soon.
Miller Hardware and Furniture Company Annex will occupy the Odd Fellows building on West Jackson Street. The space will be extensively improved and connected by a large arch, with one room designated for Second Hand Furniture and the other as a ware room.
The local exemption board expects to complete examinations for 375 conscripts today, filling the county quota of 224 with no further tests. Across calls, about 748 men have been examined and roughly 180 enlisted, excluding married men.
Two former Turman township boys serving in the army and navy become new Union readers. John N. Ingersoll of the navy on the U S S Arkansas and son of John Ingersoll, and Herman Jewell of Turman township, with Co A 18th Infantry, U S A, stationed somewhere in France.
Dr. G. R. Hammond, former Union Christian college faculty member, launches The Enterprise weekly at Merom by purchasing equipment from the defunct Merom Herald's J. J. Parker.
Prof Orren Stoddard and his family will leave Merom in about two weeks for Minneapolis where he will engage in study and teaching for the coming year at the University. He will be greatly missed in Merom and at the college.
Chief of Police Rich received a telegram reporting the Sullivan man Gus Evans died suddenly in Peoria Illinois. He was about 60, lived with his mother Mrs Amanda Evans on East Harris street and had been visiting relatives. Funeral plans include bringing the body back to Sullivan for burial.
Telegram from Miss Jeannette Rankin informs she will keep her engagement at the Merom chautauqua on Sunday. Local citizens will entertain Rankin with a six oclock dinner Sunday evening at the Bavis hotel.
A severe electrical storm hit Sullivan at 4 am Wednesday, damaging Elizabeth Crawford’s two story home on West Washington Street. A lightning bolt destroyed the chimney and shattered every upper window. The rain was welcomed by local farmers.
George W. Unger raised 60 bushels of oats with a machine measure yield of 71.5 bushels per acre. The crop, a high quality, sold at 60 cents per bushel.
Oliver Steele of this city closes a large coal deal disposing 2800 acres in Had don and Gill townships. The consideration is 35.00 dollars per acre. Abstracts prepared by Schroeder Price.
Jesse Walters son of Mr and Mrs Sampson Walters of Haddon township has been accepted for the second officers reserve at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indianapolis.
The list names jurors for the September term of the circuit court, convening Monday. Jurors report for duty on Monday, September 11, with members including Alexander Corbin, Jefferson Webb Milam, Jacob W. Combes, Frank Richardson, Rufus G. DeHart, Bluford Dailey, William Gray, Stelle B. Chambers, J. H. Berlingmier, and E. C. Eno among others.
George W. Ruddell 83 a longtime Sullivan resident died suddenly at home on South Court street after prolonged illness. A Kentucky native who moved to Illinois as a boy he lived in Sullivan over 60 years and worked as a shoe maker for 35 years. Funeral at Christian church conducted by Rev. John McD. Horne with Odd Fellows burial at Center Ridge. survived by widow and eight children, plus siblings.
Word reaches here that Dr M H Lichliter former Merom chautauqua platform manager and founder is with the American army somewhere in France. He long connected with Merom chautauqua and was a Methodist Episcopal minister and last year served as pastor in Baltimore Maryland.
Mrs. John Bruner of New Lebanon received word that her brother W. T. Mason of Denver Colorado died August 20 at age 87. Son of Anthony S. and Mary M. Mason, he lived on the former Mason farm near New Lebanon. He leaves a feeble wife, one son A. G. Mason of Indianapolis, two brothers Robert B. of Anderson Indiana and Richard R. of Boise Idaho, and a sister Mrs. John Bruner.
Marshal James H. Willis is appointed by Gilbert Gambill as chairman of the Sullivan County Defence Council protective committee. Several individuals have been named for unpatriotic utterances and Willis plans an immediate investigation.
The Sullivan County Water Company withdraws its petition for higher rates after President Wilson announces a maximum and minimum coal price schedule. Mayor Calvert and City Attorney Lindley appeared before the State Public Service Commission in Indianapolis.
James Scott about 60 years old died Saturday night from injuries after being crushed by falling slate at the Reliance mine Saturday morning.
The resignation of RE. C. Snarr after eleven years as principal of Fave Sullivan High School is announced as he prepares to enter New York duties.
Joe Lacey resigns to become principal in Graysville. Mae Traxler and J W Standley depart as city instructors. Snarr leaves after eleven years in city schools. Lacey, Standley, Traxler move to Graysville Washington and Sioux City assignments noted.
County Agent F L Wright arranged a semi weekly market held each Tuesday and Friday from 5 am to 8 am in West Jackson street between Section and Court. Citizens urged to bring all kinds of products for sale.
Eugene B. Frakes son of Mrs Dan Frakes Shelburn recently appointed lieutenant in the new U S Army. He visited here last week after training at Rockford Illinois where he has been stationed. Frakes previously served as private secretary to John C Chaney during his congressional tenure.
William Jennings Bryan sent a Sunday telegram to President Taft at Point a Pic Quebec praising Taft’s improved health and urging him to accept a Merom chautauqua engagement on Friday. Bryan called the Merom event a great chautauqua community.
