In France a Harris reunion brings fourteen Sullivan County men together, reuniting veterans from a long ago era. Local organizers note the gathering honors shared history and wartime bonds among attendees.
Private N. K. Marris of the American Expeditionary Forces in France writes from an artillery training camp at Rennes about a July mail situation. A letter postmarked July 31 arrived after sixteen days, and another postmarked July 25 reached the paper on Saturday night, with the editor noting the correspondence and location.
In a rambling diary style reunion, a Sullivan County man recounts meeting old friends among 15 Sullivan and nearby town soldiers at an artillery camp in France. He details introductions with Jim Borders Carl Brodie and Davy Crockett references, sharing memories of ship travel, Submarines, and home connections across Camp Taylor Dugger and Pleasantville.
Rev. J. T. Scull and Rev. S. I. Long completed five weeks at Camp Tevier and were commissioned as first lieutenants. Scull heads to Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg Mississippi and Long to Camp Wheeler in Macon Georgia for chaplain duties.
Mrs Ray Beauchamp and her young daughter of Indianapolis are visiting relatives in town and staying at a local residence for a short period.
Corporal Herman Jewell of Co. A, 18th Infantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Jewell of Turman township, lost a leg after a July 18 injury in France. In Havre hospital he requests no worry and hopes to return home in weeks, with a wooden leg and Thanksgiving plans. His English nurse confirms the amputation and brave service. brother Donald Jewell and the family await his return.
A Shelburn group led by O. M. Sebring and partners bought 37 acres on the Wabash near the Narrows from Herman and Rossea VanVlieck. The site, overlooking the river with bluffs, is planned as an amusement park with boats bathing beach bath houses and pavilions. It will be incorporated and developed but not opened this season.
Announcement from Carey, Kansas, of the death of Mrs. Jane Tiegs Riggs a former Sullivan County resident. Born October 1828 in the county she was widow of Richard Riggs a farmer who lived near the Warris mill in Turman township. The Riggs family left for Montgomery County in 1870.
Private Charles B. Cooper writes his Merom aunt Effie Cooper that he has escaped death by narrow margins during the last drive by the Huns. He recalls the sixteen inch guns overhead, his pride in the Second Division, and that their unit halted the German advance northwest of Chateau Thierry.
Several large farm transactions were recorded last week. Mrs John W Lisman sold a seven acre farm near New Lebanon to T B Springer for 10900. Roy Wilson sold eighty acres of the old Lillie farm south of the city in Gill township to T Roy Willis for 11200. Mrs G G Brokaw sold her 124 acre farm south of the city to Paul M Phillips for 21743. G W French sold his 118 acre farm to Claude V Lisman of New Lebanon for 14750. Lisman purchased 42 acres adjoining this farm from the heirs of Elizabeth South.
Rick McClain a well known Curry township resident died Saturday night at his home west of Farmersburg after a lingering illness. The funeral was held yesterday at the Farmersburg Methodist church conducted by the Farmersburg lodge of Odd Fellows. Burial was in West Lawn cemetery. He is survived by his widow Carrie McClain one brother Joseph McClain of Farmersburg and one sister Mrs. Howard Harris of Terre Haute.
A service flag was dedicated at Long's Chapel ten miles northeast of Sullivan with ceremonies. Names on the flag include Claude A. Zaager Louis Saude Gless Kennedy Laud Kennedy Clyde Walters Elmer Robertson Kenneth Deckard James Stewart Isaac Pierson Cecil Burk Carl Burk William Burk Walter Hummell Barnet Olson William Willis Ernest Jordan Roy Ellis Thomas Harlow and Peter Harlow.
Early Tuesday morning a fire gutted the residence of George Owings on Graysville street. The family awoke to the blaze and saved most belongings. the house and contents were not insured.
Dr Walter N Thompson a prominent local physician enlisted in the Medical Corps of the U S Army and left yesterday for Indianapolis for examination He will be eligible for call at any time and expects to return home tonight
Tony Phillips of Jackson Hill No. 2 runs a soft drink emporium and is jailed on illegal liquor sale charges. Mayor Smith will hear the case today. Phillips allegedly sold whiskey for six dollars per quart to foreigners who furnished information to Prosecuting Attorney Pige. He is alleged to have brought the liquor from Illinois.
About 50 young men must register at Sullivan city hall on Saturday August 24 for the Tec exemption process. W D Brown and Marion Bedwell will assist the exemption board, with registrations limited to those between June 5 and August 24.
Charles B. Cooper of Merom and George Phillips of Graysville are wounded in France during the big Allied offensive. Phillips reports four machine gun wounds to the face and two to the arm, near Soissons, while Cooper was struck near the ankle. Both are in hospitals and steady.
Willian T Mellott will continue as county food administrator after resigning last week upon discovering widespread sugar purchases from mail order firms contrary to food rules. A state letter assures that those guilty will be punished under food laws and shipments may be confiscated.
Mrs. Elizabeth Foust of Paxton lists five sons in government service and says four more may join under a new draft law. Walter B. Foust serves in France, Fred Foust awaits transport, Jay Foust trains in Seattle, Burlie Foust works in Washington shipyards, and Alonzo Foust has been drafted.
Miner Russell South was seriously injured by a heavy fall of slate at the Mildred mine northeast of the city on Friday afternoon. He suffered a fractured right arm and leg, plus cuts and bruises, and was taken to his home in South Sullivan after medical aid was summoned.
James Gerrard, once with M. A. Haddon, offers to teach history to help replenish depleted teacher ranks. He has lived in Indianapolis and Vincennes, served as secretary to the late Senator Shively, and was a state legislator.
Mr and Mrs Steve Dale of Chicago are visiting Mr and Mrs Harve Gordon. The latter is a sister of Mr Gordon.
Oscar E. Bland of Linton spoke at the Hymera reunion describing his six week tour of the war zone in France. He praised American soldiers and airmen, recounted a hill assault and hospital scenes, and urged more doctors nurses and chaplains without touching politics.
