Pioneer Woman Aunt Susanna Jewell Reaches 85 Milestone
Aunt Susanna Jewell, pioneer resident now with daughter near Hillsdale Indiana, celebrated her 85th birthday. Born April 2 1827 in Bullit Kentucky she moved to Sullivan County in 1834. She recalled wolf threats wagon travel and log cabins with mud and stick chimneys. Her family farmed taught by her father and joined the Methodist church. She and Jonathan Jewell lived on farms near Shelburn Turman's Creek for forty years and raised several children including Mariah Brock Lydia Trueblood Elizabeth Jewell and others.

Hymera Soldier Killed In San Francisco Parapet Fall
Ollie E. Shepherd 25, son of Mrs. Mahala Tipton of Hymera, died in the Presidio General Hospital San Francisco from injuries after falling from a parapet of a battery. He served three years in the Coast Artillery Corps and reenlisted for three more. Burial was in Hymera’s K of P cemetery.

Victim Cannot Recover After Shot While Feeding Chickens
Gus Mahan, 39, a farmer near Hymera, Indiana, was struck in the abdomen by a rifle bullet while feeding his chickens Monday morning. He died thirteen hours after being rushed to Terre Haute hospital. The shooter is unknown. theories range from a hunter's stray shot to a government rifle fired from a distance. Mahan served on the Jackson township advisory board and had a clear 200 yard view at the moment of the shooting.
