Exciting Indiana Octo ber Election Tales From Early 1880s

Indiana in the early eighties shows October presidential elections as decisive for national outcomes. The 1880 campaign featured Hancock and Garfield for president, with Indiana then closely watched. Both parties spent lavishly, reports of plots and brass bands, and a November shift after October results. The 1889 October election produced a unique 329 chalking craze in Marion County. The 1878 push to move elections to November failed due to legal value, keeping Indiana as an October state.
