As the 1943 school year opened Sterling Township High School welcomed 12 transfer students from across states including Virginia Beattie Chambersburg Pauline Jackley Elmer Brown Betty Lou Hubb Marian Johnson Ruth Bohoms Earl Pitts Bether Rickwell Neva Rockwell Merton Dean Wallingford and Barbara Wooster. 1943 Graduates Fill Useful Positions In Public Life

Graduates from last year’s senior class have taken useful roles in business, professional and military life. The list details alumni across Navy, Marines, schools, offices, farms, and nursing, including Ira Abney, Joan Atterburn, Helen Becker, and many others.

Script yearbook substitute offers 14 issues for 1 dollar

The School Board skips a traditional yearbook this year and replaces it with Script. For 1.00 readers get 14 issues and a binder, cheaper overall than last year’s 8 issues for .75. Subscriptions start Friday, with issues every three weeks as a permanent record of the school year.

All Students Take Tests Measuring Educational Development To Date

Eleven hours of tests given on the 16th and 17th measured educational development at Sterling High School. Created by the State University of Iowa, the testing aims to reveal weaknesses and strengths for both student guidance and wartime service fit. Miss Krughoff led the effort with teachers assisting in administration and interpretation. Results will be returned within two weeks.

Five New Courses Added At Sterlin High This Year

Sterlin High announces new offerings Spanish II applied art civics health and 8 h for the year Spanish II taught by Miss Merchant is a new course and not a continuation. Applied art by Miss Franke teaches color and handicraft. Civics under Miss Krughoff covers government and community life. Health taught by Mr. Mitchell. Speech courses led by Miss Grubb count toward English grade. Beginning French not offered this year due to low enrollment.

Five New Teachers Join Sterling High Faculty

Sterling High announces five new teachers joining the staff. Miss Helen Franke from Springfield Illinois, a Iowa State College graduate, will assist Homemaking. Miss Gazelle Adams from Illinois teaches English and dislikes photos. Miss Mildred Speer, Monmouth College graduate, teaches English on the second floor. Miss Lorraine Bosworth from Chicago will lead physical education and summer camp plans. Miss Gena Grubb, Iowa State College and Columbia University graduate, coaches speech and activities and collects autographs.
