On February 20 in the Sterling Township High School Library at 7 45 p m an individual student recital was held under the direction of Mr William Tonkin It featured varied pieces with solo duets and a boys quartet from SHS including Glenna Gould Ruth Dudley and Jack Reiske among others as performers with classical and operatic selections.
The GAA sponsors a WPA dance from 8 30 to 11 30 with Maurice Mintke's orchestra. Carol Taft chairs the event and committees cover tickets publicity decorations floorshow refreshments and cleanup.
The Robed Choir performed a Lenten Vesper on February 18, 1951 at 3 45 PM at St John’s Lutheran Church. It featured works by Palestrina Bach and Tschesackoft and included soloists Ruth Dudley Glenna Gould and Tom Slothower. The program was tape recorded and broadcast over WSDR at 7 30 PM.
The Sterling Advanced Speech Class won the state style contest at Rock Falls High School on February 24 with 29 of 30 points. Dixon placed second with 14. First second and third winners advance to the DeKalb sectional on March 10, led by Janice Wagner Earl Bailey Joan Bogott Janice Scott Pat Hanson and Bob Mathis.
A concise listing of typing and shorthand training items includes 30 word typing for Joyce Dettman and Janet Ottmanns, 40 word typing for Marilyn Bawden and Tom Slothower, 50 word typing for Joan Benishek, and 100 word shorthand for Carol Camps.
On March 13 the Sterling Chapter of the FFA held its annual Father Son Banquet in the Lincoln Hotel dining room. The event featured a program led by chapter members including a toastmaster and several musical performances. Officers, Greenhands, and participants in upcoming FFA contests were announced, and a February 20 Rotary Club program showcased FFA activities with several members presenting.
The Advanced Speech Class directed by Miss Barbara Larson staged a second performance of Our Town by Thornton Wilder with some role changes. Cast included Jack Reiske as stage manager Janice Wagner as Mrs Gibbs Paul Small as Dr Gibbs Lora Lea Wolf as Mrs Webb Bob Baither as Mr Webb Joan Bogott as Emily Webb John Michel as George Gibbs Ralah Wesner as Rebecca Bob Mathis as Simon Stimson Dick Allen as Howie Newsom Jane Morrow as Mrs Soames Arthur Magon as Constable. Coffee and sandwiches followed in the SHS cafeteria sponsored by the Fourth Street Methodist Church with lighting help from Bob King and Ted Sulouff.
Tuberculin tests were administered at SHS on Monday March 12 with a free clinic. County school nurse Miss Ruth Kirk spoke to an assembly on March 5 about the tests. Anyone with no prior test or prior negative result could participate. Positive results will lead to a free chest x ray. The test is a skin procedure to detect tuberculosis infection.
