Future Farmers Organize Clubs at Sterling High

The Sterling High FFA organized two new clubs Dairy Production and Swine Production to boost competition for state level awards. SHS students Don Lester Ronald Ricklefs Don Shantz Bob Hicks lead the applications for multiple Star State Farmer and other awards across Farm Mechanic Electrification Soil Water Management and more. Only juniors seniors or graduates within one year may apply.

Hi-Tri Meeting Delayed to February 22

The Hi-Tri club postpones its February 8 meeting to February 22 to plan sending selected members to a mid winter planning conference. Discussions will cover the summer camp and selecting two girls to attend. After-the-game dances have drawn 75 to 100 attendees and were chaperoned by Miss Marie Dickson Miss Frances Hatch Mrs. Fred Wagner and Don Langell.

Latin Club Plans February Initiation Meeting

The Latin Club will hold a meeting near the end of February to initiate new members. The entertainment committee is chaired by Doris Woessner with members Sue Hey Dick Crane Marge Meyer David Clark and Marilyn Matznick.

Katie Puskedra Wins 1951 DAR Award

Katie Puskedra was selected as SHS's winner of the 1951 DAR award for good citizenship. The senior class meeting on January 30 in the school cafeteria voted for the girl best qualified by four qualities including reliability, honesty, punctuality, service, leadership, self control, initiative and patriotism.

Pins Awarded To Reins And Appenzeller

Commercial pins awarded with Jo Ann Reins receiving a 40 word typing pin and Pat Appenzeller earning the 120 pin the year. Pat is the first student to achieve the 120 pin this year.

Drive-In Slang List Cracks Up Readers

A playful late entry lists quirky nicknames and phrases such as Jivin at the Drive-In and You Fracture Me as part of a humorous glossary. The items mix nicknames, insults, and slang with comic captions referencing school life and social misfits.

Sophomore Class Rings Showed at SHS Meeting

The Sophomore class held a meeting in the SHS cafeteria on Thursday February 1 with John Dillon presiding to present the 1953 class rings. The rings were selected by a committee of class officers and two students and will be shown at Gehrings for students to choose.

March calendar lists school tournaments and events

The March calendar shows dates for regional basketball tournaments from Feb 26 to March 2, sectional and state basketball events March 6 to 17, and other activities including debates, speech tournaments, testing, reading, dance, a Father and Son banquet, Easter vacation, end of the third quarter, and a district solo ensemble.

Student Council Seeks Student Proposals For Meetings

Representatives invite students to submit topics for discussion to be raised at future council meetings. When topics are collected the council will convene to discuss them. The process depends on student participation to enable meaningful meetings.

Debaters Triumph At Augustana Tournament With 12 Wins

East Rockford claimed first place finishing all twelve rounds. SHS debaters faced 25 teams across two days February 2 and 3 with three rounds each day. Sterling eyes NCIC tournament at Mendota on March 3 with about five teams entered.

Sterling FFA Plans Parent Son Banquet

Future Farmers of America at Sterling High schedule a March 20 banquet in the high school cafeteria. The event features a potluck supper and a building tour for visiting parents.
