Mitchell and Ohnen Named to NCIC Team

Chuck Mitchell continued Coach Gene Hall’s pattern of placing NCIC first string stars. Dick Ohnen earned a spot on the second string as Sterling’s second representative. Mitchell set three scoring records this season, including 36 against Hall Township and a total of 441 points with the Ottawa game. Ohnen may not chase records but is valued, while Oleg stands out as a top NCIC defender averaging 10 points per game. Coach Hall praises the team effort behind the players.

New Blind-Robin Tournament To Feature Local Schools

A new one-season, blind-robin setup will include Sterling Newman Rock Falls and Morrison with the first event set in Morrison. Regional picks favor Sterling over Milledgeville Dixon over Franklin Grove Rock Falls over Amboy Newman over Lee Center with Sterling then Dixon and Newman over Rock Falls before Sterling defeats Newman. The VFW Post and Auxiliary present a flag to the Field House and urge student support.

Rally Helps Frosh-Sophs Edge Geneseo 55 to 45

Rallying early, Coach Brandau's frosh sophomores beat Geneseo 55 to 45. Geneseo struggled in the second quarter scoring only 4 while Sterling poured in 13, keeping a constant 10 point margin. Gehlsen tallied 7 assists and 10 points, Combs led Geneseo with 17 as the Maple Leafs faded.

Sterling Wins NCIC Mat Crown

Sterling Wrestling swept 9 of 12 championships to claim their second NCIC title in as many years with 58 points, ahead of Geneseo 37. Dixon and Ottawa tied for third with 20, Rock Falls 17. Ken Kraft and Dick Card extended their win streak to 21. Other Sterling champions: Ronnie Pineda 98, Earl Beck 127, Don Kilberg 138, John Fassler 154, Glenn Alderfer 175, Don Dir heavyweight.
