Jean Hart, elected by the senior class as the Good Citizenship awardee of the Daughters of the American Revolution, received a pin and certificate at a D A R meeting on April 10. She exemplified dependability, leadership, patriotism, and service. one Illinois winner will receive a $100 war bond instead of a Washington trip.
Jerome Robbins announces the 1945 to 1946 debate topic will address compulsory military training in the postwar period. He urges interested students to begin reading now while awaiting the exact wording.
Seniors will take exams Thursday May 31 and Friday June 1 during regular class periods. Underclassmen exams run Monday June 4 and Tuesday June 5 on a two hour schedule with specific period times. No school for the remainder of the week.
Mr Eades notified that 8 H students who took the ASTRP qualifying test on April 12 have successfully passed. The names listed include Jim Carlton Jack Cassens Ardenen Eugene Hank and Jim May.
A rounded list shows many seniors planning summer paths from military service to college and factory work. Names include Katherine Ague heading to Crawfordville School of Telegraphy and Randall Barnett joining the U.S. Army, with others entering Navy, Army, or local businesses.
The 1945 graduation will be held at 8 o clock June 5 at 8S stadium and, if weather delays, at Sterling Coliseum. Dr John Gordon, Rockford clergyman and vocational adviser, is the main speaker. Diplomas will be presented by Philip Ward. The band, led by Henry Burch, will play in the ceremony. Claude Brown, class president, will speak for the seniors.
Sue Behrens has been selected as the Script editor for the coming year after two years on the staff. She has recently served as student reporter for the Gazette and is active in Latin French Debate and Dramatic clubs. Assistant editors remain to be chosen.
At the last meeting the senior class decided to present Sterling high school with a memorial honor roll for students who attended the school at least two years and died in World War II. The committee investigating options included Audrey Pabst chairwoman, Martha Whaley, Claude Brown, Bill Scott, and Lyle Book.
Senior class leaders named Helen Parker as president Bob Deem as vice president Virginia Haugen as secretary and Kenneth Gould as treasurer. Junior class leaders are Bill Stevens as president Kenneth Church as vice president Richard Hains as secretary and Beverly Welker as treasurer.
Sterling Township high school has again earned the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges recommendation. The district notes Sterling has held this distinction since 1905.
