Major Ivan Taylor Dies in Philippine Campaign

Major Ivan Taylor former Sterling High standout, class of 1931, was killed in action on Luzon March 29 during the Philippine campaign. He rose from private to major in the 33rd division and is survived by his wife, mother, and two children Janet Sue and Terry Nathan.

Latin Club Banquet Set for May Day in Gym

The Romani Hodierni Latin Club hosts its annual banquet on Tuesday May 1 in the school gym. Miss Echternach and Miss Joiner lead the program with dinner after invocation by Wallace Feldman. Henry Burch Named New Leader of S H S Band

Henry Burch of Morrison has been engaged to complete the season as conductor of the Sterling High School band. The board of education is negotiating for his services for the coming year. He is a renowned cornet soloist with the Sterling Municipal Band and studied under noted masters. His two sons serve overseas.

The Senior and Junior Hi Y groups plan a Father and Son Banquet for Monday April 30. The committee seeks Earl Prince Sr as speaker. The Junior Hi Y has hosted two supper meetings with Reverend Van deBunte and Mr DeVoe as speakers. Mr Whaley spoke at the Senior Hi Y meeting.

The Sterling Gyro Club hosted basketball squads from three local schools and their coaches at the April 17 meeting. Notable figures included Clem Crow, former Notre Dame basketball coach and current Iowa State football coach, and George Bresnahan, Iowa head track coach and former Sterling High star.
