Seniors are advised not to delay inquiries and campus visits to secure scholarships and financial aid. Students should see Miss Mildred Krughoff for conferences with college representatives, catalogs, and materials available in her room to discuss higher education options.
Sally Mosher was crowned Sno Ball queen at the annual dance on December 27 in the Central School Gym due to heat shortages at the Jr High. Her attendants were Judy Swain and Carol Taft. bouquets were given to all. Committees included Decoration chair Peter Dillon and others, Arrangements chair Mary Saunders and others, Refreshments chair Sally Mosher and others, Publicity chair Jan Wagner and others.
On December 16 Sterling High sent two debate squads coached by Miss Barbara Larson to DeKalb for a regional tournament. Thirteen high schools entered forty four teams and 127 debaters and coaches attended. Sterling teams A and B included Ann Farrer Earl Bailey and Reiske Norma Miller on A, Floy Allen Bill Scott and Ruth Kimball Bob Iaither on B. team A won one round with Reiske Miller securing the point on the negative side.
The Robed Choir directed by Mr. William Tonkin announces two February events. A Lenten vesper at St. John’s Lutheran Church on February 11 and a student recital February 20 in the new SHS library in the evening. Recital participants include Ruth Dudley Glenna Gould Lois Ann Good Gordon Brown Johnny and Tom Slothower with the Quartet and the Girls’ Ensemble performing.
This month several commercial students earned pins for notable work. Louise Menz received an 80 word shorthand pin Bettie Winn a 100 word shorthand pin Juanita Aldrich a 30 word typing pin Luella Bushman a 40 word typing pin.
Latin Club members met after school on Friday January 12 in the Visual Education room. Mrs Philip Ward showed slides of Switzerland Italy and northern France to the group. The event concluded with refreshments.
The Junior Rotarians to be honored are Carol Camps Glenna Gould Jan Wagner Gordon Brown Paul Small and Marv Kaiser. Junior Rotarians join luncheon guests at the regular Rotary meetings each Tuesday at the Elks Club.
New members of the National Honor Society were pledged January 16 during an assembly in the Library. President Lora Lea Wolf spoke on the qualities of NHS members. Roscoe Eades gave the envelope with the new member names. Inducted: Doris Kunde Betty Scott GLenna Gould Pat Meenen Jan Wagner Jane Eshleman John Michel Bill Scott.
February listings show dates for G A A induction, varsity basketball games against Rochelle Rock Falls Geneseo Wells Hall Dixon Ottawa and more. Sectional wrestling district basketball tournaments and a student dance are also scheduled along with Lincoln's Birthday observance Vesper Robed Choir and a vocal recital.
The Sophomore Class hosts Cupid's Capers at the Coliseum on February 8 from 8 30 to 11 30 pm with Maurice Mintke orchestra. Tickets 60 cents singles 1 20 couples Co chairs Ann Farrer and Dick Ohnen with multiple committees listed.
Members of the Dramatic Club practice for the N C I C Individual Speech Contest to be held February 17 in Rochelle Illinois. Six divisions include Verse Speaking Humorous Reading Dramatic Reading Extempore Speaking Oratorical Declamations and Original Oratory. The top two in each division advance to the conference tournament with potential progression to district and state finals.
The Sterling chapter of the Future Farmers of America met at the Galt Grange on January 16 to plan a soil conservation program. Swine dairy and beef clubs will meet the fourth Wednesday each month with a parent and son banquet planned and a bake sale scheduled at Frank's Market.
The Junior Red Cross sponsored students to entertain soldiers at Shick Hospital in Clinton Iowa. The participants included the Girls Ensemble, a band ensemble, Pat Hanson, and Mr. Darrell Dunham. Cookies and coffee followed the program.
