End University of Life Term on Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday marked the close of the University of Life term, with the Sterling Rock Falls group planning the year under Rev. Albion J. Tavenner and fellow ministers. Discussion groups addressed Personality Friendship Christian Living The Meaning of Life Choosing Vocations World Problems. Student leaders included Miss Hunt Miss Peterson Miss Joiner Miss Krughoff and Mr Stryker.

Spanish Club Banquet Held March 22 in Home Ec Building

The Spanish Club banquet occurred March 22 with Gilbert Fidalgo as master of ceremonies. Mrs. W. T. Middleton showed travels in Spain while Charles Burger and several members attended. The menu included sapa de arroz mole de gallena frijoles refritos tortillas and ensalada. Marian Deets received a birthday cake from Paul Gribbons after a short Spanish prayer.

Juniors Lead In Bond Buying Race Pro Tem

The junior class leads a war bond drive with a four quadrant high school silhouette display in the study hall. Each student has a numbered section and a victory seal marks each bond purchase. Purchases may be made by others for the student, crediting his number.

Former Students In Service Number 604

Sterling Township high school notes more former students in the armed forces than currently enrolled. A service flag shows 604 names on display in the main hall, funded by a September dance at the coliseum. Janet Swartley and Mr. Stryker invite additions and corrections for a typewritten list to be hung nearby.

School Band Public Concert At Coliseum Honors Latin Rhythms

The high school band under Director J. J. Richards gave its annual public concert at the Coliseum with a varied program of overtures marches and solos. Highlights included a rhumba performance of South American Way featuring Pat Marquis Bob Swehla Xavier Cugat interpretations and a vocal number by Cathryn Detweiler.

Youth Center April Party Lights Up School Year

The Youth Center hosted a lively April party on April Fool's Day with a spring themed room and festive colors. Betti Feanne McNeil and Leon Mulcahey chaired the evening while Charlotte Church supervised concessions. Music played from records featuring many new selections.

Army Navy tests announced for Wednesday March twelve

Army Navy college qualifying exams were scheduled in Misshoff's room on March fifteen for males who will be seventeen but not twenty two by July first, 1944. The exam applicants include seniors, recent graduates, and college students without high school certificates. Seventeen year olds choosing Army may gain scholarships through the Specialized Training Reserve. Test takers included seventeen seniors and a few from Community Prophetstown and Sterling High School.

Lat May 6 Prom Set for Junior and Senior class

The 1944 Junior-Senior Prom is scheduled for Saturday May 6. Co chairs Betty Rae John and Neil Janssen lead committees. Maurie Bruckman’s band will play from 8 30 to 12 with Bill Scott and his orchestra. Juniors with paid dues host the event and seniors are invited. Other students may attend only if escorted by a junior or senior.

Krohn Sparks Hi-Y Talk On Railroads War Effort

The Senior Hi-Y met at the Y M C A rooms on Tuesday March 28 after supper. Neal Wick introduced Bill Krohn who gave an art history of the Chicago and North Western Raj and described railroad war effort cooperation. He outlined postwar plans, answered questions, and the club voted to hold after supper meetings weekly and form a program committee.

Sterlin Township Debaters Finish Third in Sectional Contest

The Sterlin Township high school debate team placed third among northern Illinois schools at the Freeport sectional held Saturday March 25. Team members Audrey Lahman Cathryn Detweiler Mary Zigler Don Dewey and coach Mr Robbins joined events from debate verse speaking to oratory and one act plays with state meet qualification for winners.
