Former Township High School superintendent E T Austin died Monday March 13 his death prompting a school dismissal to allow faculty members to attend his funeral. Nine current teachers recall his impact boosting standards and broadening staff experience through travel and community outreach.

Life of E. T. Austin Chronicled in Sterling

E. T. Austin, born December 12, 1864 near Ann Arbor Michigan, pursued teaching and University of Michigan studies before earning his diploma in 1893. He led Owosso and Sterling Township High School, guided tours to Europe, lectured on history and archaeology, directed a tourist bureau, and supervised the nativity scene at the Grandon Civic Center until his death, leaving a lasting impact on Sterling's educational and civic life.

Home Economics Class Supports Red Cross Efforts

Sterling students in Mrs Martin's second period class craft bed jackets and spring suits for Red Cross as part of home economics. Miss Harriet Hay from DeKalb Illinois State Teachers College assists for six weeks as student teaching, the second such visitor this year.

Theatre Workshop Presents Scenes From Three Plays

The 8 H 8 theatre group presented scenes from He Knew Lincoln Macbeth and Husbands Ghost with Mr and Mrs L Verne Slout in makeup transitions. Students and faculty witnessed makeup changes on stage and enjoyed the unusual program introduced by Bob Bulmer.

G A A Sponsors Leap Year Party as H S Band Plans Concert

The 8 H S band under J J Richards will present its annual concert Friday March 31 at the Coliseum. Special numbers include an alto sax solo My Regard a Virginia pe B clarinet solo Long Ago and a Long trio Atala. Admission is free.

All School Matinee Honors St Patrick With Irish Themed Acts

Three clubs sponsor an all school matinee to honor St Patrick. The Latin and dramatic clubs and the Script staged varied acts including the Irish Washerwoman and dances. Performances by Bob Swehla, a Bell, Don Dewey, Bill Welton, Connie Doermann and the Pabsts entertained as students delivered light comic sketches and songs.

Scientific Lecture And Display Of Gyroscopes

A school program titled The Tops featured a gyroscope lecture by C. E. Jones of New York and a dramatic top display. The event mixed science with entertainment, including a wrestled bout among students and a monorail streetcar demonstration above the audience. The talk notes gyros power a million dollar yearly business, from gyro compasses to gyroscope stabilizers and navigation in air and sea.

Leap Year Hop Prompts One Sincere Sadie Hawkins Proposal

In a playful Sadie Hawkins spirit at 8 H 8, Joan Davis asks Bob Hope to the W P A dance. She nervously approaches him in the hall, they arrange March 24, and the date ends with a veggie laden entrance to his house for an evening of “Women Pay All.”

Junior Red Cross Ahead of This Year’s Budget in School Work

The Junior Red Cross of S. H. 8. reports progress and is ahead of its annual budget. Students in home economics have made fourteen bed jackets and holiday items while the council coordinates between headquarters and students. They sent boxes to Camprant Christmas and appealed for funds to the national fund with mixed success. Miss Mildred Speer guides the group as remaining budget tasks continue.
