Local notes list Labor Day Monday and first day of school September 11, with town updates. Numerous brief items include travel, visits, crop sales, real estate, and community events. The Steele City Stock Show dates October 19 to 21 are announced, while town officials arrange school and town matters and approve financial actions.
W. ES Willey loaded his car with his herd of Poland China hogs for exhibition at the Nebraska state fair. He plans to enter eighteen head in the ring this year and hopes for premiums similar to last year. He will not attend as many shows, returning from Lincoln and then going to Omaha in October. Accompanying him were Wm Weddel, Clyde Broadston, and Charles Crinklaw to view the fair sights.
The village council met in special session last Saturday evening with Chairman Clapp C R Bracken and Geo Bloom present. The initial act was reading a large number of bills followed by a motion to lay the items on the table.
The class of ten graduates from Steele City High will have seven teachers posted in nearby districts Campbell and Carrie Wright head Marion in Red Willow county with departure today as school opens next Monday Harry Weddel becomes Harbine principal starting Monday Esther Bugbeer teaches Carmichael district with school opening Sept 11 Margaret Andrews teaches Boettcher district starting Monday Beulah Babeoth presides Springhill district youth starting Monday Hallie James leads Turner school southwest town from Monday Hazel Condit teaches Mt Vernon northwest of town Repairs delay opening until mid month One class member Sherman Bryant plans to move to Claremont California for college mid September living with uncle Dre Bryant
Petitions in Jefferson county circulate to file L R Lambert of Rock Creek precinct as a dry candidate for the Fifteenth senatorial district to oppose Thomas Lahners Republican and William Greubhers Democrat, both of Phayer county. The district includes Jefferson and Thayer. Signatures are from the dry element of the Republican party and Bryan Democrats.
In a Saturday race near Shea a sorrel mare owned by Kansas parties faced George Hudson's bay mare for a $100 purse in a side bet and won easily. Diller records the outcome as part of the event.
Abe Martin compares some folks to a sky rocket then notes a railroad strike date set for next Monday Si 4 with unresolved terms. He mentions visits by Mrs Ee Ora of Seneca Kansas to Mrs S S Babcock in late last week and by Mr C F Stark Mrs A W Tester and children of Fairbury to the Heady home on Tuesday.
