A wartime appeal states readiness to shoe the Army of the Furrows and the Ladies' Auxiliary including wives and daughters in support of the cause.
Local notes report residents traveling to Lincoln to enlist in the Sanitary Corps and others visiting relatives in Maryville and Colville. A light rain cooled dust while church services and missionary offerings are planned. A ball game against Endicott ended 6 to 5, and a Fern Barber engagement party hints at an August wedding.
The list names Charlie Wright Roy Broadston Irvin Pool Perry Cassel Carroll Wilson Clyde Broadston Phill Pickering and Elton Bagbee of Company B Fourth Regiment who will head to the front as friends at home organize support for the war effort.
The Jones System staged a Steele City chautauqua last weekend with higher turnout than any prior event here. Despite a one week notice and tight advertising, the program impressed locals. Dil linger and Edna Arch attracted top interest, Farnam wowed with rapid speech, Carl Nelson the cartoonist delighted crowds, and the Arion Male Quartet plus Miss Lehrbas earned warm applause. A contract for next year’s chautauqua was signed before Bonar left town.
