Hughes Drake Couple Wed in Washington Kansas

Beulah Drake daughter of Steele City residents and Rupert Hughes son of local parents wed last Wednesday evening June 30 in Washington Kansas. Rev F Clark Bateman conducted the Christian church ceremony. They will reside on the Drake farm and enjoy a long, happy life together.

Banquet by Mens Bible Class Attracts Large Attendance

The men’s Bible class of the church hosted a banquet last Friday evening with ladies as guests. More than a hundred people were served and reports say a good time was enjoyed. An entertainment program by the men followed the meal.

Drought Lifted By Night Rain and Lightning Strike

A dry spell ended Saturday night with a wind driven shower and later substantial rainfall totaling about 14 inches. Severe electrical discharge accompanied the storm striking the home of King Phelps as lightning traveled down the chimney. A hay barn on the Glen Good Rich farm was blown down and a windmill belonging to Chas Wells was damaged.

Lightning Strikes Phelps Home During Storm

The Phelps residence was struck by lightning Saturday night tearing the north chimney side. Laura Phelps on the couch suffered burns and shock. the cot appeared to burn briefly. The chimney and interior plaster suffered damage. Mr Phelps and two daughters were in the room. Mrs Phelps and boys were in Kansas.

Steele City's Fourth of July Celebration Draws Record Crowd

The Steele City celebration attracted its largest crowd and vehicles to date as a perfect weather window followed rain, with crowding on downtown streets. Police controlled traffic, no accidents were reported, and the day featured a parade, band music, horse races, a baseball game, and an airplane parade lift. Awards were given in boys and girls races, horse and pony events, and a free picture show plus a dance capped the evening.
