Fern McClellan leaves for Fairbury while many residents visit relatives in Vesta Diller and Humboldt. Community notices list travels, visits, and family gatherings including Staley, Barber, Bundy, Sampson and McDonald households. Father and Son Banquet announced for September 9 in the new church basement. reserve plates at the lumber office.
The Steele City Presbyterian Church announces Sunday services at 10:30 A M and 11 A M with an evening service at 7:30 P M. The upcoming Sept 11 event will be held in the new church basement. A ladies’ event last Friday drew praise and a hearty thank you. Reserve your plate at the lumber office.
The farthouse northeast of town owned by A. E. South burned Sunday morning with little saved as the fire spread before discovery. Mrs. Southwick is in Colorado visiting. Mr. Southwick had lit a stove before chores and returned to find a kitchen blaze. Parlor and buffet were saved. much furniture and the new electric light plant were damaged. hose owned by Mrs. Strawhacker of Fairbury and insured. Mr. Southwick left for Colorado later that day.
The annual Diller picnic held last Wednesday and Thursday drew a large crowd from the area. Weather was favorable and concessions and rides attracted many. Velina Wehling, joined by her brother Dell and directed by Frances Crinklaw, performed contortion acts as a feature.
R L Packer section foreman of the St J G railroad at Powell leaped to safety when signals failed on No 497 through freight. He landed in a 10 foot Nebraska flood torrent, atop a barbed wire fence, suffering bumps and wire cuts before hospital care and return home. He escaped with his life despite swift, deep current and heavy clothing.
Pete Wenz son of Louis and Mrs Wenz of Diller wed Minna Roelfs daughter of Abba and Mrs Roelfs of Steele City on Monday August 22 at State Line Zion Lutheran church. Rev Paul Raschke officiated. Attendants were Milred Roelfs and Otto Wenz. A dinner followed at the bride’s home. They planned a honeymoon trip to the Black Hills and Bellefourche before settling on a farm south of Steele City after September 4.
The Steele City school opens Monday September 5 with a largely unchanged corps of teachers led by superintendent G V Casler. The high school staff includes Casler Melton Meserve and McCleran, while 7 8 grades are taught by Kuper, 5 6 by Wehling, 3 4 by Gretzinger, and 1 2 by Deems.
The Jefferson County Agricultural Society runs the county fair with officers from five towns, not just Fairbury, and urges outlying towns like Steele City to join booths. The board promises a strong program of entertainment, education, and fellowship to make this the best Jefferson County fair yet.
On Wednesday August 24 friends gathered at Mrs Emil Harris home for a birthday surprise return in darkness. Guests included Mr and Mrs R Arner Fay Clark Harris Davin Glen Riddle Hubert Manning and others. Ice cream and cake served as several families joined the celebration and greetings were exchanged. Other visits note relatives traveling from Deshler Nebraska Davenport Iowa Atwood Kansas Hannibal Missouri and nearby towns for family visits.
Mr and Mrs G W Unruh subscribe for themselves two daughters and two grandsons in Des Moines Iowa securing local news delivery for the household.
