Hazleton exits Act 47 status as DCED picks new secretary
Hazleton officially leaves distressed status after nearly six years under Act 47. Mayor Jeff Cusat recalls the low point in 2017 when deficits and debt threatened payroll while recovery coordinators from PEL helped craft a multi year plan through 2022. Luzerne County Council held public interviews with three finalists William McIntosh Romilda Crocamo and Fred Rosencrans for the full time county manager job. McIntosh a Dallas Township county engineer oversees buildings and vehicles. Crocamo of West Hazleton acted as county manager from July 2021 to May 2022. Rosencrans of Dallas Township leads the 911 center since 2014.

Hazleton suspects seek dismissal of murder charges
In Hazleton a pair accused of ordering a fatal drug deal shooting presented a witness in court claiming no involvement. Wellington Marte Ramirez 27 of Freeland and Keliana Moronta Jimenez 20 of Hazleton face murder charges for the October 9 shooting that killed Felix Dini 22 of Freeland at the rear of 199 S Wyoming St. Prosecutors tied them to the case partly on a witness identification.
