The city of Stamford schedules a charter amendment election for November 5 to allow extending city limits via stem annexation to Lake Stamford. The plan, aimed at incorporating lake land, prompts county opposition concerns and a published policy assuring no fishing charges or new lake restrictions, with 30 days notice for protest.
The City of Stamford received an award for zero fatal accidents for the third consecutive year. Ross Kemp of the Texas Highway PatrolSafety Division presented the plaque to City Councilman George Pryor and Police Chief Jack Tidwell at a Rotary luncheon Tuesday.
Ross Kemp of the safety division of the Texas Highway Patrol told Rotarians a second radar unit will soon be used in this district. He credited radar with saving lives by slowing motorists, but warned a 14 percent vehicle increase will push highway deaths up by three percent this year. He noted four million vehicles will travel Wear Whee and congestion will rise. speed remains the main problem, contributing to 62 percent of last year’s accidents, and officials may consider lowering the Oklahoma turnpike speed limit from 70 mph due to frequent crashes.
Mrs. Howard Graham and her son Bruce Dale of Pittsburg Texas returned home Sunday after two weeks with sister Linda Moore and at Vincent with her parents Mr and Mrs Lee Moore. Mr and Mrs Moore also spent a few days here. they formerly lived in the area.
W. H. Walker of Stamford entered the hospital Tuesday night for medical treatment.
A two day drive on September 30 and October 1 aims to raise 2500 dollars to cover a year of operating costs and modest interior improvements for the Doghouse Stamford Youth Center. Roy Arledge leads the campaign with support from Dr. George Pryor Jr and Mrs. Dave Walker, plus local civic and Rotary Club participants.
Stam ford Sanitarium receives Salk polio vaccine and offers limited public access. Children ages three to fourth grade and pregnant women only may be inoculated. Three injections planned with four weeks between first two and seven months to third. Doctors nationwide cooperate, injections cost three dollars each at time of service.
Charles E. Brownfield Jr. spoke to Oliver Street School parents and teachers on civic responsibility and juvenile delinquency. The opening meeting of the new school year introduced new principal O N Smith and new president Josen Brown, with Mrs Clara Alexander’s first grade earning $5 for the most parents present.
A three vehicle crash on Highway 380, about seven fifty p.m. Saturday, three miles east of Stamford, sent three people to Stamford Sanitarium. Cars involved included a 1953 Ford driven by Henry T. Cartwright Jr, a 1955 Oldsmobile driven by Wade M. Bowsher, and a 1938 Chevrolet truck driven by Juan Ramirez. Admitted were Max Franklin, 15, of Lueders, Ramirez and his wife Consuello Ramirez. Police say Bowsher, driving west, tried to pass Cartwright, struck Cartwright’s car, and skidded into the truck.
Nominations for Woman of the Year must be submitted by Friday September 25 to Rozella Veazey chair of the Public Affairs committee of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Include reasons for nomination to aid the decision. The winner will be announced at the September 29 meeting coinciding with National Business Women’s Week at Central Christian Church.
Avoca Methodist Church launches a revival starting Friday September 23 with Rev. Clif ford Mayo of Abernathy as preacher and Rev. John Sykes of Faith Methodist Hamlin leading singing. Morning services begin Monday September 26 at 10 am with daily prayer at 7 pm before the 7 30 pm service. Mayo is an evangelist for the Northwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. Pastor Rev R H Meixner invites the public to attend all services.
Rev. Julian Rainwater was named pastor of the Rockdale Baptist Church in the Rockdale community northeast of Stamford. He accepted the call two weeks earlier and announced his decision Sunday night. Services will be held the first and third Sundays each month starting October 2.
Stamford begins a city wide fire hazard blitz on Wednesday September 28 with 40 inspectors from the West Texas Division of the Texas Insurance Fieldmen's Association checking mercantile buildings schools and churches. Teams will affix red FIX ME tags and provide hazard lists with corrections. Fire chiefs and local officials promote safety with school drills parades and community programs involving students and the Chamber of Commerce.
Jones County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis received 2200 for March of Dimes headquarters in New York to cover back bills and care for polio patients. Chapter Chairman L Precht says funds are advance surpluses from thriving chapters to assist those in the red. He warns more funds will be needed this year and notes the possibility of repaying headquarters from January 1956 contributions as the Salk vaccine offers hope for the future.
Fire red FIX ME tags will mark hazards in Stamford on September 28 as the West Texas Division of the Texas Insurance Field men’s Association inspects schools churches and businesses. The warning aims to prompt compliance to reduce property and life risk across Texas.
The city council approved a 1956 operating budget that is substantially the same as the previous year. Total spending is similar, with a slight decrease due to reduced revenue from airport gasoline sales. Revenues include taxes receivable of 106 443 dollars, with 102 347 expected to be collected, and a water department rise from 169 180 to 171 233 dollars. The city named First National Bank as depository and hired James W W Leslie and Co to audit for 350 dollars. The Ministerial Alliance was granted a sign permit, and two city employee elections showed continued coverage under both the Texas Municipal Employees Retirement program and Social Security. City Manager Steenson noted Railroad Commission probes into Stamford Lake area oil wells and saltwater pollution warnings.
Bruno Meil, 68, suffered broken left shin in three places and a broken right ankle when struck Monday around 6 45 am while sitting on a car fender near a ditch on the Avoca Nugent Farm to Market road construction. Mrs. M A Wills, returning to Stamford from a farm trip, says she veered to avoid a barricade and may have hit Meil with the back bumper. He lies in Stamford Sanitarium for treatment.
Interest builds as the American's Pick the Winner contest doubles entries from last week. First prize is 5.00, second 3.00, third 2.00. Entries must be mailed to sponsor firms, not the American. Tie break is Texas Tech versus TCU. Previous week winner Pat Wood received 5.00. Otis Sims and a tie between Mrs. Paul Banks and Charles Saunders split 2.00 each.
Stamford Bull Pup football game time moved to 7 30 o clock per Coach Gordon Wood on Wednesday morning. The Junior High team travels to Abilene to face South Junior at 4 00 p m Thursday evening, with the sports page not updated in time.
