County Agent R. H. Maxwell seeks the farm with the oldest terraces to study long term effects and productivity. He notes about 125000 acres terraced in Jones County, many built with home made drags or road machinery, often at little or no cash cost.
Pioneer West Texan Mrs Sophie Ann Booth born March 4 1858 in Alabama died Friday noon at son R E Booths Berryhill area home east of Stamford Funeral held at Cottonwood Methodist Church with burial in Cottonwood cemetery Barrow Funeral Home directed. Survived by four sons three daughters thirty five grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren plus spouses and extended family.
C M Lester principal and Exchange Club president outlined a 25 year history of the National Exchange Club in a talk before the local club last Friday. The program was led by W G Swenson with Lester and Rev Wm F Rogan on the educational committee. September is anniversary month for the club organized in 1926 with H G Andrews as first president. E R Pace Gulf agent was introduced as a new member. President C G Lewis praised meeting attendance.
Maria Boeer, 92, mother of Mrs. Karl Wolf of Stamford, died at a daughter’s home near Rule. Services were held at the Hickey residence, with cremation in St Louis. Born in Germany April 12, 1844, she moved to Texas as a child, married W. M. Boeer, and lived in Stonewall-Haskell counties. Surviving are son Fred Bore of Rule and six daughters including Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Earl Wolf of Stamford.
Dr. C. F. Cheelzzli an Ethiopian bishop and educator addressed a Tuesday night meeting at Central Presbyterian Church arranged by local clergy. He noted Ethiopian life and laws, predicted a coming world war, and spoke of Ethiopia regaining freedom as Italy becomes involved.
Vernon D. Hart post of the American Legion condemns James A. Farley for appointing Ernest S. Goens to the Democratic campaign committee in Texas. The resolution urges Goens to refuse influence from his Legion role until he relinquishes office at the national convention September 21 to 24. Rev. B. Harris offered the resolution and it was adopted unanimously.
The Ellen Smith Circle met at the church for an informal gathering conducted by Mrs. Billy Bryant who led the devotional. A new mission study titled A Preface to Racial Understanding by Charles S. Johnson was chosen to begin once the books are ordered.
W F Carroll and Albert Decker of Haskell bought the Model Bakery on South Ferguson street and opened the Best Yet Bakery last Friday. They will sell breads rolls and pastries. The former owner M A Burleson closed the shop and left for Fort Worth to start a new business.
Dr. John W. Brown urges yearly physical checkups as a key personal defense against heart disease cerebral hemorrhage nephritis and cancer. He notes public health has reduced many illnesses but individual action remains essential for ongoing protection and proper health habits.
Rev E A Reed pastor of St John’s Methodist spoke on Fellowship as the Rotary Club luncheon featured the program. T A Upshaw headed the fellowship committee and introduced the speaker. Roy Sonnamaker of Southland Tire Company joined as a new member and was oriented by President J F McCulloch. A C Cooper reminded Rotarians Stamford Day at the Fort Worth Frontier Centennial on September 25 and urged attendance.
Pastor John M. Rice returned to Stamford and began another year with two services at 11 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. last Sunday. Crowds were large with two gospel responses, one conversion, and one confession. Next Sunday’s topics include The Whole Duty and How the Holy Spirit Leads as the church aims for a harvest of souls.
Richard Lehman 41 head of Strauss Dry Goods Hamlin died instantly when his car skidded at Tone Creek Bridge near Palo Pinto at 7 30 am. N E Money 66 died minutes after hospital arrival in Breckenridge. A girl and boy escaped injury. Funeral plans and survivors listed.
Reverend P C Williams reports Memorial Baptist Church had its largest Sunday attendance in history with over 200 in Sunday School, one new member by letter, and a large, well attended baptismal service on the river at Luders Encampment grounds where 18 candidates were received before a cheering congregation.
Rev Ben Parker leads well attended services at Central Christian Church with sermons on The Meaning of Repentance and The Elder Brother A baptist service followed the evening worship Our Sunday School meets at 9 45 a m with preaching at eleven o clock The third sermon in the plan of salvation series will be The Meaning of Confession Evening services start at eight o clock midweek classes are held as scheduled Lectures cover the founders lives and teachings of their religions KA Religion members participate in the sessions.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce outlines plans to marshal a large motorcade to Fort Worth for Stamford Day at the Centennial. The caravan departs Stamford Inn at 10 a.m. with a 4 p.m. Fort Worth arrival and parade to follow near the Centennial grounds.
From May 1 1933 to June 36 1936 the Federal Land Bank and Land Bank Commissioner funded 615 loans totaling 1 448 100 in Jones County. Of these 276 loans were 494 400 by the Federal Land Bank and 339 loans 563 700 by the Land Bank Commissioner.
Mrs. R. G. Bowdry was elected secretary at a Stamford Chamber of Commerce directors meeting. She succeeds Frank M. Locke who resigned effective September 1. Bowdry has months of office work and prior chamber experience with the West Texas Chamber. The board will stop collecting membership pledges and run on a $100 monthly city appropriation.
Haskell earned the right to meet Hamlin in the Wichita Valley League playoff by defeating Monday 5 to 2 behind Tommy Hall who struck out 18. The series opens Sunday at 3 30 p m at Haskell with Hall facing Slats Hughes. Five games are scheduled and the first to three wins takes the pennant.

Roy Duke was installed as post commander of the Vernon D. Hart post of the American Legion during a Monday night meeting at the Legion hall. Officers installed included FP M Locke and Price H Martin as vice commanders, Curtis Tidwell as third vice commander, R E McNabb as finance officer, Rev M B Harris as chaplain, L W Johnson as historian, Don Ferris as sergeant at arms, with W F Bosse A M Conant Dr Dallas Southard C D McDaniel and Roscoe Hood as executive committee members. Larry Daniels of Abilene, district committeeman, installed the officers. Visitors from Aspermont Hamlin Lagerton and Anson attended. Daniels addressed the Legion Auxiliary and spoke on the Houston state convention. A social feed followed the business meeting with about 45 attendees.
Last Sunday's services at Central Presbyterian Church showed growing attendance and strong devotion. The church plans fall growth, Sept 27 promotion day and church anniversary, with 9:45 Sunday School and 11 am worship and 7:30 pm evening service. The Women's Auxiliary and music groups report solid participation.
Rev Sam Morris announces morning sermon with Pouters topic and evening hour subject Be Sure Your Line Will Wind You Out at First Baptist Church. Sunday School attendance reached 857 with offerings totaling 60 dollars.
Helen Rosenwasser and Marjorie Hille were chosen as squad leaders at the high school Thursday afternoon of last week. Mrs. Lee Walker, wife of the football coach, has accepted sponsorship of the group. Margaret Harris was reelected president, Mildred Hod vice president, and Francesa Prewht secretary. Margaret Boston, Tommy Faye Stell and Billy Ray Wiley were selected for drum majors.
The Lueders Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. J P Jobne on Friday September 14. Miss Martin the Home Demonstration agent met with the members and gave a demonstration on her breads. The meeting opened with the song The Old Spinning Wheel. Refreshments of lemonade sandwiches cake and candy were served to the members and visitors listed in attendance.
