Stamford announces another numbers game Wednesday September 19 with six $20 prizes. Tickets from over 40 local firms are valid. only post Sept 5 tickets compete. Shoppers must check the stores they visited for matching numbers to claim cash prizes.
Mrs Minnie Vahlenkamp of Stamford died Sunday at 7 40 a m after suffering a Friday stroke at Haskell Hospital She was 52. Survived by husband A C Vahlenkamp eight siblings and four brothers among other relatives Funeral was at St Pauls Lutheran Lagerton with Rev Rudy Wendel and burial at Old Brandenburg cemetery Kinney Funeral Home directed arrangements. She had lived near Old Glory and leaves three sons Herbert Eugene and Virgil and three daughters Anita Baldree Verlene Corzine and Betty Weise plus parents and other relatives.
Cotton is coming in slowly with three Stamford gins operating from 8 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. The season is typical for long hours and around 125 bales have been ginned so far by the three gins.
The Stanford B&PW Club invites nominations for Woman of the Year to Mrs B Gay by September 21. Nominating letters must be one page detailing qualifications. Current winner is Ona High, florist of West Texas. Dinner event September 27 at Oliver Street School Cafeteria marks Business Women's Week with new president Mrs Lilla Helfin.
Reynolds Street and Reynolds PTA hosts a come-and-go tea on September 18 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the home of Dr and Mrs Cc L Cromwell to introduce school teachers and welcome new president Mrs J V Weaver.
Check recipient is Stamford Fire Department for 25 dollars mailed by Tom Martin to commend response to August 25 fire at De Luxe Courts. Fire spread from trash in an alley, damaging one unit of the complex.
Mrs Annie Kirk underwent a minor procedure at the Stamford Sanitarium and is reported to be improving.
Lady golfers and their husbands will meet at Stamford Country Club on Thursday September 13. Supper is set for 7 30 p m with a 5 p m gathering to finish plans for a new bridge to be built on club grounds.
Fifty two Stamford girls earned a high school half credit in homemaking by completing a 100 hour supervised summer project. Some logged 106 hours. many reported about 300 hours with an average of 175. They gained skills in meat prep, sewing, furniture refinishing, meal planning, and home care under teachers Mrs. H. K. Langford and Miss Ethel Rowell.
A singing event takes place Sunday at 2 p.m. at Davie Church in Jones County. Everyone is invited to attend.
Stamford Public schools report a total enrollment of 1205, about 100 fewer than last year. Junior and Senior high enrollments total 504 with 320 at Reynolds Street, 245 at Oliver Street, 40 at Bomar Heights, and 96 at Washington.
Here Mr. and Mrs. Dale Prince and daughter Vera Gayle relocate to 201 East Moran Street Stamford. Prince works with Gene Turnbow at the Juke Box Company.
Stamford High School presented its 1956 annual in assembly with the Texas state champion football team and coaches named in a dedication by annual editor Gaylan Gillewn. Gordon Wood named Texas Football Coach of the Year. Annuals go on sale in the high school cafeteria and may be obtained in Room 15, Mrs Jewel Austin's room at set hours.
Mrs. Roy Plumlee of Stamford was awarded the first citation in the Abilene district of Southwestern Bell for unusual initiative in handling an emergency. An injured customer, Gladstone McLennan, used a flame thrower and was critically burned. Plumlee mobilized rapid aid by calling a series of stations after the caller was unable to reach help, likely saving his life. The ceremony was attended by family and company officials including Dunkin Davidson.
The 1956 Bulldogs host Ballinger at home Friday with key players returning from minor injuries. Ballinger, defeated by Brady 14 0 last week, seeks its first victory as Stamford aims for a strong show. Coach Gordon Wood notes lineup tweaks and hopes to leverage renewed action from injured stars. Game time is 8 o'clock.
Cheerleaders ask townspeople to yell along with the student body for the upcoming game. The call and response centers on the line Stamford Bulldogs and Lets Go together, aiming to boost spirit and unity during the Friday night event.
More than 200 men heard ROG Bob LeTourneau recount his life and business faith, urging men to let God guide them. He spoke at the Jones County Baptist Brotherhood rally in First Baptist Church, Artedge Field, before traveling to Indiana and beyond with a 2,000,000 mile testimony. Seventeen churches joined the Association. 259 men attended with 63 from outside the Association.
A. C. Humphrey acquires the H. O. Wooten Grocer Company building at 114 East Rotan Street. He plans cotton storage there and says the purchase is in final stages. The property has been vacant since the Wooten branch was closed at the start of the year and cleanup is already underway.
Mr. and Mrs. R. F. (Tobe) Kuenstier and son Boyd moved to Odessa. Mr. Kuenstier, formerly employed in Andrews, will work in Midland.
