Stamford car tag demand falls short of projections as only about 1,200 of 2,200 tags issued in Stamford and similar turnout at Anson county tax office. With a deadline of April 1, late purchases risk state statute violations for cars operating without 1960 tags.
Stamford officials reviewed an architect firm estimate to remodel the city auditorium city hall fire station and public library at a total of 349 024 with the auditorium receiving the largest share 149 594 for auditorium 136 251 for city hall and fire station and 63 179 for the library air conditioning and heating add 32 000 16 000 and 14 000 respectively the plan includes seating for 360 on the main floor 100 in the balcony 290 banquet seats and 60 on the elevated stage the council asked the city manager to study bond prospects and to seek further guidance on the project page 8
A petition circulated in Stamford downtown shows strong opposition to reactivated parking meters on the city square. Businessmen from the north side reported 15 of 16 signatures in favor of removal with 18 citizens overall backing the move. The effort will be presented to the city council.
Several Stamford youngsters earned superior ratings in piano and voice at a Fort Worth junior festival held last weekend. Superior piano awards went to Kay Lovvoru Betty Lindsey Sara Tee Selmon Susan Nance Scottie Pryor Jeffrey Wofford and Glenda Lindsey with others named for excellent and very good in piano. In voice superior ratings went to Carol McCullum Scot tie Pryor Susan Nance Jimmy Harkins and Nancy Kennedy. Sara Tee Selmon and Judy Merriott earned excellent ratings. Accompanists included the Mayes Lester Wofford Merriott and Lindsey families.
Lions International District 2E1 convenes in Stamford for a zone meeting Tuesday night at the Stamford Cafeteria at 6 p.m. Attendees include Dist Gov. Ben Lawson Deputy Dist Gov. George Sazama and Zone Chairman Dr D L Livon from Wichita Falls.
Stamford police charged two men after a confrontation over a stomped toe. One admitted wielding a rock. both were fined for fighting and affray amid a tense private dispute.
Advance sales for the annual Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce banquet show near hundred tickets sold. The event features Dr. Arthur A. Smith of First National Bank of Dallas as speaker. The banquet is set for Friday night, April 1 at the National Guard Armory.
Two car crashes were reported with no serious injuries. A two car crash occurred on Hamilton Street and a single vehicle wreck on Berth elot when the driver hit a telephone pole. Eight hub caps were stolen from cars at the Trail Chevrolet lot.
Absentee balloting opened March 16 for the city election set for April 5 with three council seats. Place 2 features a contest between Travis Horton and L. E. Million Jr as Steve Bennett’s seat, while Raymond Hammer and Carl Swenson run in other unopposed or contested places. School board elections show two unopposed candidates Weldon Walker and Eugene C. Swenson with balloting at the county courthouse in Anson on the first Saturday in April.
Albert Peterson was bedfast yet neighbors from Stamford area gathered early Monday to work his farm south and east of Stamford. About 15 tractors were counted as the land was quickly cleared and work completed by the group.
Democratic county chairman Bland Harper announced ballot order after a Monday drawing. Longley has a distinct advantage in the sheriff race with Dave Reyes as the only other candidate. Absentee voting starts April 17 and 4,283 voters plus 133 under exemptions are eligible to vote in the first primary.
Stamford prepares to launch the Jones County Red Cross campaign with a 7 15 breakfast at Nat's Cafe. Mrs. Frank Gamblin, county chairman, says Stamford aims to raise one third of a $6000 quota and will recruit workers from local service and civic clubs.
Eddie Loehman ten year old fifth grader at Reynolds school is resting at Stamford Sanitarium Wednesday morning after a leg laceration from a broken glass while playing. About twelve stitches were needed to close the wound. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Loehman Sr of 607 East Reynolds.
Stamford Justice of the Peace Roscoe Hood was awarded a certificate along with other justices after a week long institute in San Angelo. The program, sponsored by the Texas Law Enforcement Foundation and Texas A&M extension service, covered duties of justices.
Mrs. W. B. Johnson of Stamford born in 1871 recounts a long life shaped by family faith and devotion to the New York Yankees. She praises Dizzy Dean, Whitey Ford, and players like Hank Bauer and Yogi Berra, recalling a migrant journey from Athens Tennessee to Texas and settling in Stamford during a Texas boom era.
