Stamford American Raises Single Copy Price to 20 Cents

The Stamford American will charge 20 cents per copy starting with the April 6 issue. Newsprint, chemistry, and ink price increases drive the hike, but mail subscription rates remain unchanged.

Lions Club drives subscriptions for Stamford American

The Stamford Lions Club launches a two day subscription drive on April 3 and 4, with Bill Longley as chairman. The paper price rises to 20 cents but mail rates stay. local Texas counties pay 3 dollars per year, other Texas areas 7 dollars, and outside Texas 10 dollars. Sales tax on small paper subscriptions is removed by the Legislature.

Reynolds Students Dominate District Poster Contest

Reynolds School students led the California Creek Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest for grades four through six, with only three outsiders in the top nine. Top finishers include Paul Treadwell in fifth grade, Christi Terrell in sixth, and Pam Black in fourth. Second places went to Renee Medford and Allison Haterius, with third places to Pablo de la Cruz, Shawn Lindsey, Rosa Sanchez, Teddy Gray, and others from Anson, Lueders, Hawley, and nearby districts. All winners to be honored at a banquet April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Anson Elementary School cafeteria.

Tuxedo Homecoming Dates Chosen For May 6 and 7

The Community of Tuxedo sets its first homecoming May 6 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion bunkhouse. Registration starts 2 PM Saturday with a coffee. Sunday May 7 features a 1 PM luncheon catered by a local restaurant. Each family should bring at least two covered dishes. a $2 registration fee applies. Reservations due by May 1.

Two Stamford track athletes placed as Steve Kohout finished fifth in the 120 yard high hurdles in 16.3 seconds and Kalvin Kelley secured third in the discus with a 141 feet five inch throw at the Snyder meet.

Reunion Relays Set to Open With Hamburger Supper

The second annual Stamford Reunion Relays begin tomorrow with a hamburger supper at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The meet features 34 schools, divisions A AA and AAA, and honors former UT star Jerry Prewit. Events start at 8:15 a.m. with field events at 8:30 and running finals at 2 p.m. Admission is 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for students.

TCR names two new rodeo chairmen in Texas

The Texas Cowboy Reunion Inc announces Don Welch as lighting chairman and Gary Mathews as gates and guards chair man succeeding long serving volunteers. The 48th TCR also adds a night rodeo on June 30 and moves the opening parade date to June 30, with Welch and Mathews joining a slate of longtime TCR chairs and officers in a broad organizational update.

Council starts ball rolling for dog pound

Stamford city council moved to implement a dog pound with two councilmen named to pick a site. Weldon Holbrooks retires April 1. Jim Astin to report back. Potential sites include the water filter plant and the sewage disposal plant, each with pros and cons.

Deadline years for baseball in Stamford youth program

Stamford Base Ball Program announces sign-up dates on March 25 and April 8 at the Youth Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. A $5 fee applies. April 8 is the final signup day. Clean-up sessions at Little League field on April 4 and 6 at 7 p.m. Registration covers tee ball, minor and major leagues, Little League, and softball with playing age as of July 31. The program seeks managers for minor league, tee ball, and girls teams.
