Stamford Community Theatre to stage Tom Jones June 2 3

Darrell Woolwine announced that eighteen people have been cast for twenty two roles in Tom Jones to be presented by the Stamford Community Theatre June 2 and 3. Two male roles remain to be filled and extras of both genders are needed. Evelyn Watson will be stage manager. Cast includes John Wendelborn Suzanne Haterius Mark Smith Sheila Tait Debra Brenda Snow Jenny Jones Pat Connally Jimmy Bellamy Alyce Daniel Reba Davis and others. Jones County Today survey underway in Stamford

A social and health service survey titled Jones County Today began in Stamford with interviewers John W. Coleman and Victoria Castro. The study targets 500 interviews over one to two months, using a 20 percent random sample of households to assess recreational services and drug abuse needs for MH MR programs and local agencies.

Scout Show '78 on Stamford square April 8

Area Scouts plan third segment of Chisolm Trail Council Scout Show '78 on Stamford square from 2 to 5 p.m. Gary Mathews chairs the event with Cub and Scout units from Stamford Leeders Hamlin Anson Haskell Rule Rochester and Aspermont participating. Tickets cost 1 for adults while under 18 are admitted free and will be sold at the show.

Paper drive planned to aid Day Care Center

The second monthly paper drive to aid the Day Care Center is set for this weekend. Stamford residents should save paper and drop it in the grain trailer at Hamilton and Wetherbee. Residential pickup is Saturday with Chamber of Commerce arranging via Wade Petty. Proceeds fund the Day Care Center budget. 33 children are enrolled. Mrs Miller notes the last drive was successful and hopes for better this time.

First Baptist Church Announces Spring Revival Week

The First Baptist Church announces Spring Spiritual Renewal from April 9 to 17 with daily activities and 7 p.m. services led by Pastor Dr Jim Enfield and Associate Pastor Larry Armentrou. Visitation and personal witnessing are emphasized as the youth team returns from a San Angelo retreat where they prepared the musical Bright New Wings.

Local girls to host annual track meet in Stamford

Nineteen girls track teams will compete in Stamford at the Stamford Girls Relays with field events starting 9 a.m. and preliminaries at 11. Finals set for 2 p.m. Breckenridge defends, joined by Clyde, Hamlin, Haskell. Other teams include Aspermont, Baird, Goree, Merkel, Nocona, Olney, Paint Creek, Rochester, Rule, Santo, Spur, Sweetwater JV and Wylie. Ballot order set for Jones County May 6 election

Voters in Jones County will see a long ballot with Charles Stenholm listed near the end in some counties and first in others. Local names include Jim Sharp, Fike Godfrey, Jim Snowden, Dusty Rhodes, Jim Baum and Crews McCulloch with county posts for District Judge, District Attorney, County Judge, County Clerk and Commissioners. Hospital and local elections loom in Stamford area

Stamford voters face city school and hospital district elections at the Youth Center. Hospital district races draw most attention with three incumbents challenged by southern Jones County residents. school board contests include five candidates for two seats. city council sees three candidates for three seats. Absentee ballots indicate strong interest, with 58 hospital votes and smaller counts elsewhere.

Stenholm car caravans seek volunteers

Stamford area residents are invited to join the Stenholm campaign car caravans for the 17th district. Darrell Richards coordinates the effort, with events in Jack, Wise, Young on March 31. Palo Pinto and Parker on April 1. Comanche and Erath on April 3. and Howard and Scurry on April 6. The May 6 Democratic primary looms.

Stamford High Students Enter District UIL One Act Play

Stamford High School students advance to the District UIL one act play contest set for Tuesday April 4 in Ryan Little Theater at McMurry College Fine Arts Sayles Blvd. Directors meet at noon with performances starting 1 p.m featuring Merkel Winters Wylie Coahoma Ballinger Colorado City and Stamford. A dinner break follows Coahoma with the final three plays at 6 p.m. A small admission charge.
