Rainfall totals surpass previous highs with official 0.65 inches in Stamford and about an inch regionally. Year to date 1.30 inches, February and March normals noted. farmers hope ongoing moisture sustains wheat until a larger rain arrives. A misty start and thunderstorm night brought measurable moisture. no damage reported.
James High florist was named Stamford’s boss of the year at the Business and Professional Women's Club annual banquet. Bryan Bradberry spoke urging purpose in life. High is owner of High's Flowers with his brother Joseph, husband to Janice, father of Jennifer, and active in local civic groups.
Cotton growers from over 30 counties will gather Thursday afternoon for Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Inc. annual meeting in the high school auditorium at 2 o clock. President J B Cooper Jr of Roscoe will preside. Executive vice president Charles Stenholm of Stamford says the session should be one of the most important.
Frank Morrow a retired Stamford banker remained in critical condition at Stamford Memorial Hospital after an auto crash Sunday night during a rainstorm. His wife Mrs Morrow was also hurt but not seriously. A third car struck the Hargrove vehicle. police investigator Paul Carlan described the scene on Hamilton Street as Morrow pulled from Yale Street.
City leaders weigh participation in a tax equalization survey with the school district the Stamford Memorial Hospital Board and local officials in attendance. Mayor Andrews estimated the city accounts for about 60 percent of the district and proposed paying only its pro rata share to access survey cards and valuation data. Council members cited the benefits of unified valuation across taxing bodies while no formal action was taken.
Banks to close Saturday all day for the first time this week in Stamford and Lueders. Previously these banks operated a half day on Saturdays.
Army Private William A. Brewer, 18, son of Mrs Cora L. Orr of Lueders, was assigned March 1 to Company A 2nd Battalion 1st Infantry 196th Light Infantry Brigade near Tay Ninh Vietnam. Brewer entered the Army in January 1966 and was last stationed in Germany. He is a 1965 graduate of Lueders High School.
Stamford Memorial Hospital District sold 500000 in bonds to Dittmar and Co of San Antonio at an average 4.92 percent. The premium paid was 10960 to cover issuance costs. Plans by Tittle and Luther Abilene architects passed review and bid dates should start by June 1 with federal funds timing influencing start.
The Annual Jones County Singing Convention will meet in Anson High School auditorium on Sunday April 2 from 10 am to 4 pm with a lunch break. President T D McKinney of Stamford leads the organization dating before 1900. Featured acts include the Brown Family Fort Worth the Davidson Family White the Key City Quartet Abilene and the Tankersley Family Knox City. The public is invited.
The Stamford city council approved seeking state funds to upgrade the Stamford Municipal Airport. A Texas Aeronautics Commission grant application was sent this week. The state may provide up to 20000 dollars from aviation fuel taxes, independent of federal aid, for runway, apron, and landing lights improvements estimated at 82692 dollars.
Two Stamford High School alumni share Texas Tech honors among 15 scholars recognized for scholastic attainment. Jimmy Harkins and Sara Tee Selmon Hardin received college honors at a Sunday service at the Lubbock Municipal Auditorium, with Mrs Hardin noted as a top Arts and Sciences senior.

Walter Ford a retired baker died at Stamford Memorial Hospital after several months illness. Funeral services were held at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Freeman and Rev. Kathryn Byrd. burial in Highland Cemetery. He was born in 1891 in Alvarado and moved to Stamford in 1935. a World War I veteran. He married Lizzie Stubbs in 1947. Survivors include his wife, a daughter Ida Belle Ledbetter of Fort Worth, three grandchildren, and a sister. Spec 5 Teddy Daniel returned home from Viet Nam service briefly before rejoining. Stamford plant employees were notified of upcoming changes with no local impact. Carhartt acquisition by Lorch-Westway is planned for April 1, with Carhartt division led by Harry Wasoff Jr. The Stamford Chamber welcomed the factory.
E-5 Sammy Gonzales reported to Fort Benning Georgia on March 18 for six months of Officer Candidate School training. He has previously been stationed at Fort Lewis Washington.
