Many Motorists Yet To Buy Car Licenses Before Deadline

County Tax Assessor-Collector A J French warned of a busy period as the April 1 license plate deadline nears. He estimated about 2500 passenger cars and 1500 trucks remain unlicensed with offices in Lueders Stamford and Hamlin and Saturday hours extended to 3 PM to assist motorists.

Quality cotton seen driving Rolling Plains gains

At the Rolling Plains Cotton Growers annual meeting Dr M K Horne Jr outlined that higher quality cotton, not just longer staple, is needed to compete with synthetic fibers. He noted imports, price, and research must improve to add up to a possible half million bales per year. James Parker and Carl Cox stressed uniformity, seed blocks, and automation, while Charles Stenholm urged market-focused standards and sampling advances, with officers re-elected and plans for new testing plots.

Stamford Fifth Graders See Capitol Visit Highlights

Stamford fifth graders toured Austin last week to view state government. They met Gov. Connaly, received autographs, and posed for pictures, with a Senate resolution recognizing their visit. Students included Mary Helen Acosta and Shirey Bell among others.

Two Jones FM Roads Included In April Letting

Texas Highway Department lists two Jones County farm to market roads in Precinct 3 for April letting. FM 1226 runs from Funston south to Hawley about 12 miles, continuing the New Hope Road, with right of way costs near 30000 dollars. A second road, FM 3034, extends from FM 660 west to Highway 277 just north of the Jones Taylor county line.

Four Elections Face Stamford Voters In Coming Days

Stamford area voters are set for four elections over the next days. On Saturday two seats on the Stamford County Line Independent School District board will be filled with contests for Place 1 and Place 2 alongside ongoing holdovers. Also Saturday county school trustees vote with candidates from Stamford and Anson. Tuesday brings city council, mayor, police chief races and four Stamford Memorial Hospital Board seats with several incumbents seeking another term.

Stamford High School coaches Keith Munnerlyn and Larry Dippel resign their positions effective year end to take new roles at Hereford High School. Larry Wartes is now Hereford athletic director with Munnerlyn and Dippel as assistants. John C. Dyer from Cisco will teach five history classes formerly Wartes duties.

Stamford hosts the county spelling bee eliminations with 60 entries. winner Jacob Vasquez and runner up Cherry Moore vie for the Jones county crown. First place advances to Wichita Falls for April 29 with expenses paid by the Stamford Jaycees.
