Funeral services were held for Rudolf M. Swenson manager of the Pitchfork ranch who died in a grade crossing accident at Benjan. The service at his father A J Swenson’s home and a second at Pethel Lutheran Church honored him. Survivors include three brothers J E Spur W G and A M G Swenson.
Bob Bryan son of Mr and Mrs Henry Bryan is elected to the University of Texas chapter of Phi Beta Kappa a national honorary scholastic fraternity He is a senior at the University of Texas and was salutatorian at Stamford High School in his class.
A rabbit drive will be held in the Bunker Hill community on Tuesday March 24 starting at 9 a.m. Hunters meet at Bunker Hill school in Haskell county. Organizers say there will be plenty to eat and everyone with a gun is to take part.
Two Stamford men Aviation Cadets James W. McAllister and William E. Lovvorn will graduate from the Air Corps Advanced Flying School in Stockton California. They will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Air Corps Reserve and receive silver wings before active duty with the Army Air Forces. Both completed 20 weeks of primary training at Cal-Area Academy Ontario California.
J L Hill Jr was re elected chairman of the Jones county district of Boy Scouts of America at a re organization meeting in the Stamford scout building Tuesday night C D Hopkins was elected local chairman for Stamford under a plan for complete town and district organization Other district officers and committeemen were chosen with some absent for confirmation W R Postma Scout field executive explained the new program and Stamford and Anson were the only county towns represented at the session.
Pvt. Orval P. Frazier 23 son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Frazier of Lueders died Saturday night in Florida from a brain concussion after a jeep collided with a train during a rainstorm. Funeral Thursday at 2 PM at the Church of Christ in Lueders with Rev. Moreland, Rev. Eubanks and Rev. Henderson officiating. Burial followed in Lueders. he served in the 36th Infantry division Headquarters and Military Police Company and had been stationed at Ft. Bliss Camp Bowie Camp Blanding. He enlisted two years ago and is survived by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Mr and Mrs George Ludecke and Miss McCormick visited J Roy Ludecke at Wolters in Mineral Wells last week. The trip involved family connections as they greeted Lu decke on the outing.
Seventeen Stamford women including teachers and homemakers earned Red Cross first aid certificates under Miss Vera Steely and Dale Phelps. A junior class at Stamford High School has 37 signed up. an advanced course and Civil Defense class started. more textbooks and materials arrived for home nursing and nutrition courses as instructor certification proceeds.
More than 250 yards of snow suiting arrive at the Oliver Street Red Cross Sewing Room and the facility will open daily starting Monday. Cutters are needed to prepare garments for children ages two to ten for air raid shelters abroad, plus sewing kits and Red Cross kits for armed forces and hospital bedside use.

The Central Presbyterian Church Auxiliary met at Mrs. A. Russell's home with Mine Dick Rowland presiding. Mrs. W H Attaway was named delegate to the Golden Anniversary Synodical meeting at Snyder March 30 31. The program themed Bomb-Proof Satisfaction featured readings songs and scripture followed by a social hour with refreshments.
The North Side Jones County Singing Convention will be held in the Baptist Church at Bethel on Sunday March 22. Everyone is invited to attend. The annual convention meets in Saeen the Sentay in April, Rena Fayeeil announces.
The Stamford American hosts the eight year running cooking school with Mrs. Cora Wilson presiding. Cake contest winners include Mrs. Weaver Medlin first and Mrs. J. W. Rye second. The event notes possible wartime shutdowns due to shortages and honors several sponsoring businesses.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Homer Purcell and her infant daughter Evelyn Augusta at 5:30 p.m. in the Evicksdahl home and 6 p.m. at Pethe Lutheran Church. Mrs. Purcell died at Stamford Sanitarium on Friday after a throat infection. the infant was stillborn ten minutes before. Rev. Hugo B. Haterius led the rites. burial followed in the churchyard. Mrs. Purcell, born Evelyn Christine Seth, was 21, married in 1936, and survived by husband Homer Purcell, her mother Mrs. Eric Seth, two daughters Carolyn Christine and Judith Joyce, and several relatives.
Stamford Rotary Club prepares a luncheon inviting business competitors as guests next Tuesday. The vocational service committee will run the program featuring a question and answer session about Rotary and its principles. Dick Rowland led the program with President Frank Ramey assisting. J W Dewees is on a 16 day furlough.
Stamford citizens at St. John's Methodist church adopted resolutions urging Congress to cease political strife and focus on war needs. The plan forms a national defense movement with Stamford Chamber of Commerce directing efforts, sending resolutions to Rep. Sam Russell and Texas Senators, and coordinating citizen action to win the war.
County war on rats to be discussed Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Anson at the office of county agent Chas. Griffin. William Heit of the U S Fish and Wildlife Service will outline procedure. Defense club presidents Chamber of Commerce officials and Land Use Planning members are urged to attend.
Resolutions adopted at a mass meeting urge Congress to end political delays and align national policy with war needs. The plan seeks 24 hour production, wage and price controls, anti trust suspensions, and full use of all industries for war material with strict anti strike measures. The document calls for organizing a national defense movement and sending copies to representatives and the press.
Mrs Lucy Blake aged 75 died Thursday at 9 45 am at the home of her daughter near Stamford. Funeral services are set for Friday at 3 pm at the Church of Christ. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home of Charpe handling arrangements. She was mother to Stamford women Mrs Young Mrs Carson and Mrs Ed ge and is survived by 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The Stamford Development Company formed to build FHA houses plans to buy 34 city lots, with several on Vanderbilt street. They call for bids on 10 houses immediately as new rental or sale homes are prepared. The charter was delivered by City Manager Grady Bowdry at a directors meeting. C. F. Upshaw was elected president with E. R. Pace as vice president and L. E. Loveless as secretary-treasurer.
Plans are underway to double Stamford Flying School enrollment by July with construction progressing to meet the increase. Willam F. Quinby reports survey work by Randolph Field officers this Saturday to determine further needs.
Mrs. Sallie Bailey Garnett of Pembroke died Sunday at 100 plus years. She lived with her grandson Garnett Forgey on the same lot since shortly after the Civil War. A Bethel College attendee in 1859 60, she was honored on her 100th birthday observed October 23, 1941.
R A Fuqua purchases the R A Bible Hardware store on the west side of the square and takes charge Monday. He has worked with Mr Bible in Abilene for 16 months and returns to Stamford to make his home. No personnel changes are planned.
The American Legion will sponsor a dance at the Roundup building on the Texas Cowboy grounds Monday night featuring These Play Boys as the entertainment for dancing.
