Robert Clifton Cobb, serving with General Patton's Third Army in Europe, promoted in the field from technical sergeant to second lieutenant. He is assigned to a hospital group and is the son of Mr and Mrs W V Cobb of Rockdale. 1st Lieut. Wortham S. Ashcroft of Weatherford officially listed dead by the Navy Department. He vanished on a Guadalcanal mission in November 1942 as a Marine Corps aviation pilot after volunteering in 1940 and entering aviation cadet training in 1941. His brother J. M. Public memorial service for Pvt Gordon Haynes Jr who died February 1 from battle wounds in Germany will be held Thursday night March 15 at St John’s Methodist Church. Haynes born February 20 1920 in Stanford, graduated Stanford High School in 1937, attended John Tarleton College, Texas A&M, worked for Consolidated Aircraft, and entered service May 28 1944. His brother Staff Sgt Harry Lee Haynes, a gunner, was a prisoner of war in Germany as of August 2.

Captain Russell piloted a B 29 on the February 25 Tokyo raid with 200 ships, all returning safely. He later joined a Nagoya raid deploying 2000 tons of incendiaries, reporting fires visible 85 miles away before weather worsened. Funeral service for Mrs. F. E. Henry was held Tuesday at Barrow Funeral chapel with Rev. Miles B. Hays officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. She died Monday at her daughter Mrs. Clara Hester’s home in El Paso after years of illness. Storm tears through Stamford causing major property damage
A fierce wind swept west to east through Stamford late Wednesday causing estimated damage of 20 000 to 25 000. The heaviest loss hit Wells avenue and the Webb home, with two cotton warehouses demolished and several buildings damaged or ruined. No injuries beyond a small dog. rain totaled .27 inch and two hours of darkness followed. Nearby towns Haskell and Abilene reported similar damage.

Stamford Red Cross quota surpassed in War Fund drive
Stamford has exceeded its $6,600 quota in the Red Cross War Fund drive though exact figures were not yet available Thursday morning. Dick Rowland, in charge of the residential drive, cited nearly $1,400 raised by women as generous. J. M. Ashcroft said Jones County is close to its $18,900 goal with several communities not yet reported. Donations continue and leaders urge participation since the goal remains in sight.

Minister Held Months by Japs To Preach Here
Rev. Deane C. Walter longtime China missionary and Pearl Harbor internment survivor will speak at Central Presbyterian Church March 21 to 29.
