Cpl. Merle S. Ivy son of the Haskell County Judge and Mrs. John Ivy is hospital in the Marianns with a hand wound from Iwo Jima. He writes his parents not to worry and expects to be up in a few days. Ivy has already earned a Purple Heart from Guam and previously fought on Bougainville with a Third Marine Division unit.

Guard Unit Travels to Camp Barkeley for Rifle Practice
Thirty six enlisted men and three officers from Company G 10th Battalion Texas State Guard traveled by bus to Camp Barkeley for target practice. Seven companies, including teams from Albany, Moran, Sweetwater, Colorado City and two from Abilene, participated. Lieut. Col. John Alvis of Abilene and Lieut. Col. Bryant of Austin led the event. Each man fired 40 rounds and the unit’s annual inspection on March 19 earned high praise. A steak dinner at City Cafe followed the day’s activities.

Plans to Convert Harmon Park Into Youth Recreation Center
Gordon Davis of the Exchange Club says plans are under way to transform Harmon Park into an attractive outdoor recreation center for Stam ford youths. A fish pond with surrounding landscaping, a dam south of the highway, two tennis courts and repaired playground equipment are planned along with a wading pool supervised daily by a senior Boy Scout. Grounds will be graded and planted, with Boy Scouts aiding supervision. The Exchange Club leads the effort with support sought from B&PW Club, Pierian Club, American Legion and Rotary Club, and U S Soil Conservation service to assist in grading and pond construction. Financing details are not set, but contributions are hoped from local residents.

Major Tom Bunkley expected to arrive in Stamford soon after two years in the Pacific. He phoned his father Dr E P Bunkley from San Francisco. His wife and son Tab will meet him in Phoenix and travel to Stamford together. Rouhlac remains with the Bunkleys and attends school. Bunkley served with the Stamford Sanitarium staff before entering the service and spent most of his duty in New Guinea.

Buried in Stamford With Military Honors
Funeral service for Jack Darr gunner's mate first class US Navy was held at the First Baptist Church. Darr died of illness in a Philadelphia government hospital and was buried at Highland cemetery with color guards from the Texas State Guard and American Legion. Darr, born September 9, 1921 in Eastland, served from 1940 with Pearl Harbor, Midway, Wake, Guam, and the European invasion in 1944, after training at Norfolk and Washington, DC.

Pvt Troy Ford 23 son of Mr and Mrs Joe Ford formerly of Avoca Hamlin was killed in action on Iwo Jima February 27 per War Department telegram. He joined the Marines January 17 1944 trained in California went overseas August arrived Guam with the Third Marine Division entering Iwo Jima February 21. Born in Hill County he moved to Jones County at age four attended Avoca High and Hamlin High graduating 1940. He worked in defense in California before enlisting and is survived by parents three brothers Eudell H L and D Wilburn and two sisters Mrs Damon Lieb and Inez Ford.
