City council weighs baseball and summer recreation needs

Stamford officials debated funding for a proposed umbrella baseball program vs the existing summer recreation program. The baseball group sought about 5600 for equipment across five levels and 21 teams, while UW funds funded most of last year’s recreation budget of 1700. The park board urged preserving summer recreation and offered up to 300 for baseball materials, with future budget talks and UW funding options to follow.

Stamford County educator to receive statewide DECA honor in Houston

Superintendent Don R. Howard of Stamford County Line ISD will be named Area I Superintendent of the Year at the State DECA Convention in Houston March 11 13 at Astroworld. He organized Stamford DE program in 1964 65 and 65 66 and helped students learn the world of work to become responsible self supporting citizens. Jerry Schuchert Steve Garcia and Garry Pierce will attend the convention and luncheon where Howard will be honored.

Last minute filings boost Stamford school and city ballots

Eleventh hour filings enlarge Stamford school board to nine candidates for three places and create two city council contests. Marc Lovvorn challenges Bob Harrison and Donna Rainer for Place 2. Herman Cox and Weldon Holbrooks oppose incumbents Bill Reed and Ray Kinney for Places 3 and 2 respectively. Massey faces no opposition for Place 1. Other school board contenders include N. D. Jones, Ann Kinney, Raymond Medford and Howard Gross for Place 1. Lynn Gillespie and Mary McClellan vie for Place 7 on Eugene Olson’s former term. Incumbents Humphrey, Baize, Mills face no challengers on Stamford Hospital District board. Lueders city council and mayor races see Norwood and Goff filing for council. Lambert and Burkman file for mayor. Lueders Avoca school board incumbents Youngquist and Clifton run unopposed.

Stamford Garden Club Wins Eight Awards at District Meeting

Stamford Garden Club received eight awards at the District VIII spring meeting held at the Stagecoach Inn. More than 200 district members attended as the club earned first place in yearbook, flower show scrapbook, president's report, and two merit awards for beautification efforts, plus second and third place honors for several categories.

Stamford Students Sweep Local Poster Contest

Stamford pupils dominated the California Creek Soil and Water Conservation District poster competition with five of six firsts. Winners in each grade advanced to a March 15 banquet at Stamford High School with parents and teachers.

Irving minister to conduct revival here

Irving minister Johnny Jackson will lead a six day revival at Orient Street Church of Christ 510 S Orient in Irving from March 14 to 19. Services are 9 30 a m and 6 p m Sunday and 10 a m and 7 30 p m weekdays. Jackson has served in Pottsboro Denison Richards Amarillo and Houston and has led meetings in 19 states and Australia with tours to Europe and the Holy Land. He and his wife Nancy have four children and he holds a B A from Abilene Christian College.

Vehicle registration stickers lag with 22 days left

Stamford motorists have picked up about 1200 of 3250 expected vehicle registration stickers with only 22 days remaining. Clerk Mrs. Enis Bishop notes the new sticker system slows issuance and warns against delays and mistakes such as incorrect placement or misapplied stickers. Replacement stickers cost 1.30, and accurate application is stressed. An additional note covers local sheriff posse meeting on March 22 and officer elections.
