Voter Registration Drive In Jones County Yields 250 Registrations

About 45 workers added roughly 250 voters to Jones County lists during a two evening house to house campaign. Bill Longley, drive chair for the Bicentennial project, praised results but urged more workers to reach the hundreds unregistered and hinted at a possible follow up before May primaries.

Hospital board to discuss bids for wing finishing

Stamford Memorial Hospital board will meet at 9 a m Tuesday to discuss bids opened this week for finishing work on a hospital wing. Bids from Rose Construction Abilene 291 600 Rose and Sons Construction Abilene 316 200 C B Oates Construction Abilene 324 000 Gregg Pritchard Construction Abilene 335 412 and DLS Contractors Abilene 341 990 were received.

Explosion Injures Five In Haskell County Family

A Sunday night explosion and fire near Stamford destroyed a rural home and injured five members of the Grupe family including Mr and Mrs Arnold E Grupe Sr and Jr and their three year old grandson. Mrs Grupe Jr was moved to Hendrick Memorial Hospital Abilene with second and third degree burns. The cause was not determined but fire chief Tom Watson suggested a possible butane gas leak. The Grapes were moving into the home on a 500 acre Ballard ranch. Local clubs and a bank fund are aiding the family with donations.

School board resignations over nepotism clash roil election

The district faces a three place eight candidate contest after two board members Olson and Nauert resign amid nepotism law violations.
