Lueders Honors Terry as Outstanding Citizen at Chamber Banquet

C A Cap Terry of Lueders received the Outstanding Citizen honor at the Chamber of Commerce banquet, with Terry noted for secretarial service since the chamber’s founding about 12 years ago. Rural Carriers Elect Officers Here Feb 22

Rural mail carriers met February 22 in Stamford to elect officers. Mrs. Glenn Rennels Truett Alvis of Rochester was named president, succeeding O W Tooley. D R Bennett of Leeders becomes vice president and Tooley secretary. The auxiliary elected Roscoe Smith president and Pittman vice president. Delegates to the state convention in Abilene July 9 12 include Alvis Bennett Tooley Pittman and Smith.

Four Candidates Enter Stamford School Board Race

Four candidates vie for the two open Stamford school board seats. Election day is Saturday April 1 with filing closing Friday at 4 o clock. Latest filers are Ben Loop and J Youngquist. previously announced are Vernon Loughhorn and W M Blackburn. Terms of Marvin Hinds and Jack Mills expire.

Stamford Men Burned In Oil Rig Explosion Near Bradshaw

James Peters, 24, of Stamford and employee of Fletcher Oil and Gas Co., was hospitalized at Winters Memorial Hospital around 11:30 a.m. Monday with first and second degree burns to face and arms after an explosion at an oil rig about four miles east of Bradshaw. He was later moved to Stamford Sanitarium. his condition was not critical. Dan F.E. Beck, also of Stamford, received minor burns. Workers blamed gas escaping from two engines at the rig.

Reynolds School to host Open House for Public School Week

Reynolds elementary school will observe Public School Week with an open house on March 9 directed by the Parent-Teacher Association with Herschel Kelley as president and Mrs Clinton Rogers arranging. Refreshments, classroom tours, and student demonstrations are planned and all patrons are invited.

Football Banquet Set for March 20

Traffic Count At Orient Street Corner

A traffic count at Orient Street and the Avoca Highway prompted Stamford City Council to seek a stop light. State approval is required to replace the current blinker as several accidents at the corner have raised safety concerns.

Funeral services for H. E. Bailey 91 held in Stamford

Herbert Ernest Bailey 91 died Saturday morning after months of illness. Funeral Sunday at 3 p m at Kinney Chapel with Dr Bergin Watkins and two other pastors officiating. Burial in Highland Memorial under Kinney Funeral Home. Survivors: two daughters Lilla Heflin and Manley Sikes. two sons Norris and Carroll. one granddaughter. Out of town attendees listed.

Pioneer Hardware, run by Charles Vaden for two years, sold to Frank Moore of Abilene. The firm will be renamed Moore Hardware with wife Juanita Gregory Moore and son Kirk as partners. The Moores have ties to Stamford and church affiliations noted. Vaden described future plans as undecided.

Barrow Derby Saturday Brings Four Drives Together

Jaycees in Stamford stage their annual wheelbarrow derby with four drives combining for charity. Stamford Life seeks merger with Western American

Stamford Life Insurance Co plans a merger with Western American Life Insurance Co of Austin. Policyholders were urged to attend a March 6 meeting at the Stamford office to approve transferring assets and liabilities to the new firm. Funeral Held Here for Barney Cross in Stamford

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Methodist Church for Barney McCoy Cross 60 of Stamford who died Monday night at home after a heart attack. He had lived in Stamford 40 years and worked at the Stamford Mill and Elevator before it burned.
