Precinct 2 completes gravel road expansion totaling 35 miles in the county. The new 18 mile stretch runs from Highway 18 east of Stamford past Swenson School to Lueders and links with paved state and federal highways under Frank M. Locke’s supervision.
Frank Rhoades plans to attend the Texas Cowboy Reunion on July 4 and 5. He will rope and ride with younger cowboys, signaling a planned display of classic skills and community camaraderie.
Visitors flood Stamford for the Fourth Annual Texas Cowboy Reunion set for July 3 to 5 with an expected 40 000 attendees. The event features a cowboy rodeo, cutting horse contest, calf roping and prizes over 1400 dollars, plus enhanced grounds and chuck wagon amenities for ranch outfits and visitors.
About 1510 farmers in Jones County offered 53 512 acres of cotton to be destroyed under the acreage reduction program. County agent C C Jobson said average lint per acre would place most contracts in 11 to 14 per acre brackets with potential option payments based on government cotton sales.
Stamford defeats Rule 10 to 1 on the home diamond in the final game of the first half of the Wheat ta Valley League season. Eight bunts in the fifth inning produced seven runs as Polacek pitched four scattered hits and struck out five. Carr moved to shortstop, Bartlett to second, and Stamford strung across early runs before finishing with a seven run fifth.
Funeral services for Mrs Clyde Crawford 19 formerly Miss Thomas Earl Johnson were held at the First Baptist church with Rev Sam Morris officiating. Burial followed at Highland cemetery. She was born October 21 1913 in Van Horn and died Monday at her parents home on East Campbell street. She married Clyde Crawford October 2 1932. Survived by husband parents one sister Hazel lee and two brothers Amos and Adron.
J. E. England, 29, was fatally shot in Stamford after a dispute with Walker Torrance about ten empty beer bottles. England was hit in the femoral artery and died at 9:05 p.m. at the hospital. Torrance claimed the shot was accidental during a struggle for the gun. he was charged with murder and held on $1,500 bond. England and Torrance were listed as RFC workers. funeral services were held with burial in Highland cemetery. Survived by his wife and three sons.
John Rogers 58 died at her home near Sagerton Thursday at 1 a m after over two months illness. Funeral services led by Rev Sam Morris and Rev Joel V Grimes were held at First Baptist Church Stamford Thursday at 5 p m. Burial followed in Highland cemetery. Survived by daughters Mrs Jonnie Griggs of Stamford and Mrs E E Ellis of Kilgore and by three sons Lee and Weldon of Stamford and J C Jr of Amarillo. Burial arrangements by W N Kinney Funeral Home.
Cleburne Huston was installed as president of the Stamford Rotary Club at the Tuesday luncheon, the last meeting of the year. T A Upshaw became vice president and A L Buster was reappointed secretary for a twelfth year. Rev C R Hooton is the new song leader and a new board includes Clay Randel, Rev Hooton, D Hasen, I H Terry, and A L Buster. The next meeting is July 11, as the holiday and Texas Cowboy Reunion blocked this week's session.
Trinity Baptist Church of Abilene voted Wednesday night to call Rev. Sam Morris, pastor of First Baptist Church, to lead their congregation. Morris has not announced his decision and will respond in several days. The church had been led by Rev John Sng sevell before his recent resignation.
The Texas National Guard brings Headquarters Battery and E Battery of the 151st Field Artillery from Abilene for July 4 maneuvers and firing demonstrations at the polo grounds near the Country Club road. The show starts at 9:30 a.m. and reappears in the noon parade.
C O Moser of the American Cotton Co operative Association met with West Texas Chamber of Commerce leaders to enlarge the West Texas Cotton Growers Association committee. A meeting in Abilene was set to discuss affiliating with the national co operative. He urged acreage reductions and fair government estimates to ensure future legislation.
D B Baum former Eastland resident becomes Stamford Barrow Furniture manager replacing Fleet Shepard who moves to Hale Center for health. Baum and family reside at 310 East Oliver Street. G T Jack Tindall named Barrow Funeral Director coming from Stephenville with prior undertakings in Galveston Dallas and other cities. C S Barrow to depart July 15 for Hamlin operations.
Arrangements for the Texas Cowboy Reunion grand parade are complete. The July 4 event at noon features Mayor Charles E. Turner leading mounted cowboys, sponsors from over forty Texas towns, Boy Scouts, bands from Has kell and Stamford, and the Abilene Cowboy Band. Maritime route and parade order listed, with smaller parades on July 5 and 8.
Bryan Hawkins aged 36 of Sagerton was found dead beside the highway one half mile north of Canyon Thursday morning about 10 30. Death is attributed to heart failure with no violence or poisoning. Funeral held Friday at 4 p m in Lagerton with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements by W N Kinney Funeral Home Stamford. He is survived by his mother Anna Hawkins and four brothers Dick Hankins Lagerton George and John Hankins Panhandle Don Hankins Los Angeles and two sisters Mrs Bill Gay Stamford and Mrs A L Flowers Old Glory.
