Avoca alumni and former students are invited to the first annual homecoming on Saturday June 30. Registration opens at 1 p.m. with a 4 p.m. business meeting and an 8 p.m. program led by master of ceremonies George Morey. Everett Beaver will give the principal address, with notable recognitions and old pictures on display.
Stamford residents watch bunting across streets during the Tex as Cowboy Reunion season hoping for rain. Local lore holds it always rains on the bunting, though shows never get canceled, stars align with West Texas weather.
The Fort Worth and Denver Railroad will escort a group of officials and guests to Stam ford for the Texas Cowboy Reunion opening day Monday July 2 by a special train. The party is led by S L Fee and E G Wesson with Mr and Mrs Armstrong and many FW&D executives and Wichita Falls directors.
Mrs. E. D. Shanafelt 83 longtime area resident died Monday morning at Stamford Sanitarium after a fall and hip injury. Funeral held Tuesday at Central Presbyterian Church with Rev. Boles and Rev. Bryant officiating. burial in Highland Cemetery. Survived by husband four sons seven grandchildren two step-granddaughters ten great grandchildren and many relatives. Born Lillian Moore in Ladonia April 27 1873 she came to Bryson then Stamford area in youth. married to Mr. Shanafelt November 25 1892.
C N Haley to be installed as president succeeding Roy McAnear who will chair the board of control. New officers include W E Mayes first vice president Clifford Seggs second vice president and Dr C L Cromwell secretary treasurer. New board members McAnear Suddath and C C Dickenson. holdovers Swenson Martin and Roy Arledge remain.
Mrs. M. L. Young of Stamford entered the Stamford Sanitarium the first of this week for medical treatment.
Excitement builds for the 26th annual Texas Cowboy Reunion with four shows July 2 3 and 4 including a July 4 matinee. Open cutting and calf roping events offer saddle prizes totaling about 3200, with top riders earning saddles, spurs, buckles and other gear.
The 1953 Paint Creek High School graduating class holds a reunion on Sunday afternoon July 1 at 6 pm in Scott's Park at Lake Samford. All members and friends are invited. It will be a wiener roast and attendees should bring their own food.
The arena fills quickly as the Texas Cowboy Reunion roars to life with cutting horse eliminations on July 1 at 2 p m and gentler early rounds on July 2. Slack roping opens July 2 and 3 at 7 30 a m while calf ropers and wild cow milking pairs join the non regular shows. The quarter horse cutting event Tuesday afternoon and oldtime cowboys calf roping Wednesday morning anchor the lineup alongside nightly rodeo performances ending around 11 p m and a July 4 matinee at 2 p m followed by a supper break and a night show.
Nine head of Longhorn cattle will be shown at the Texas Cowboy Reunion on July 2 to 4. The cattle, from Fort Griffin State Park north of Albany, were bought at Abilene auction on June 21 and brought to Stamford after a State Park Board sale due to dry weather.
Independence Day designated as an official Stamford business holiday with most shops closed to allow residents to attend the rodeo. The Retail Trade committee of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce organized the holiday, though some cafes and movie houses may remain open.
A Stamford water record fell again as Tuesday consumption reached 1,710,009 gallons, following a 1,691,000 gallon tally on June 18. The prior high dated from July 23, 1954, with Monday typically the peak due to laundry demand, but cooler weather delayed the rise to Tuesday.
Official American Quarter Horse show to draw many entries and spectators, Cecil Eager as chairman notes mares judged Monday from 8 a.m. in the Quarter Horse arena. Stallions and geldings judged Tuesday at 8 a.m. with a main arena cutting contest at 2 p.m. on Tuesday July 3. Fred Albright of Paducah to judge. trophies ribbons and cash prizes awarded.
Hardin-Simmons University band of Abilene again leads the parade on Monday July 2 at 5 p.m. and will play for four rodeo performances at the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Stamford High School band and others expected to participate in the parade.
W. D. Mickler of Avoca underwent surgery at the Stamford Sanitarium after hospital examination and treatment. He is reported to be improving.
The grand parade through Stamford on opening day at 9 am will feature decorated floats ranching entries horses and hundreds of riders led by the Hardin Simmons Cowboy Band and Stamford High School band. Riding clubs include the Palomino Riding Club of Vernon with prizes of 50 25 and 15 in the float divisions and 10 5 2 50 for junior cowboys and cowgirls. A steam calliope from McMurry College and a stage coach lead early western atmosphere as parade organizers emphasize precision under parade chairman A C Humphrey and section directors.
The Stamford Business and Professional Women's Club held a bee themed officer installation at the Stamford Cafeteria on June 21. Incoming president Mrs. Lilla Heflin received a queen bee crown, with other officers honored by bee related gifts and titles. The meeting closed the summer term with remarks by retiring president Mrs. Bill Gay and guest speakers including Lynette Johnson. Intercity picnic planning was announced for August with participation from multiple area clubs.
The 6665 ranch mule colt from Guthrie will be exhibited at the Texas Cowboy Reunion on July 2 3 and 4. W G Swenson president notes the rarity as only one mule in about a hundred thousand becomes a dam. George Humphreys ranch foreman informed Swenson and arranged for the mule and colt to travel to the reunion near the Quarter Horse barns.
A square dance at Stamford Country Club Monday night July 2 begins at 8 30 p m All square dancers invited Marshall Flippo from Abilene square dance teacher will be master of ceremonies and caller Cisco band will provide the music for the dances.
About 100 rodeo contestants had sent in early entries by Wednesday afternoon. Carl Jones had set up his rodeo office in preparation for the show. Around 30 cutting horses were entered for the open cutting horse contest. Eliminations in this event will be held Sunday afternoon.
J Evetts Haley of Canyon trustee of the Cowboy Hall of Fame will attend the Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stamford on July 2. Haley and Swenson are Texas trustees of the Hall of Fame. Haley is a Texas gubernatorial candidate. Mr and Mrs Irless Brooks of Paducah arrive as guests of Mrs Ryland Gleaton and Mr Gleaton.
