Heavy weekend rains totaling 2.82 inches revived parched crops around Stamford. A cold snap followed as temperatures fell over 25 degrees, with showers continuing Sunday night and Monday night. Local totals varied up to 4-5 inches in nearby areas, and 1939 year-to-date rainfall reached 10.69 inches.
Since the Texas State Employment Service opened an office in Stamford on June 1 there have been 1000 calls, 600 for unemployment claims and referrals. The office, led by Mr. Clifton, matches job seekers with employers with no fees, storing complete work histories for registered individuals. The unit will assist during the Texas Cowboy Reunion, inviting employers and citizens to visit the City Auditorium office.
A. J. Bell Jr of Stamford won first prize of 5 dollars in Avoca's fiddlers contest last Friday night. Bennie Cox of Avoca took second with Ragtime Ann and Chicken Reel earning 3 dollars. S. E. Meadows of Leeders earned 2 dollars for Mother Under the Hill and Sally Gooden. Fourth prize went to J A Ward of Neiner. Judges were Jack Workman, Mr. Niels, and Mrs. Sadler. The event previews the Texas Cowboy Reunion Old Fiddlers Contest and registration closes before the reunion. Contestants must be at least 50 years old.
Misses Ilse and Mina Wolf daughters of Mr and Mrs Kari Wolf of this city have returned from New York City where both completed graduate work at Columbia University They earned membership in two honorary fraternities Pi Lambda Theta for women and Kappa Delta for teaching professionals Mina Wolf had joined last fall while Ilse was elected this spring Ilse is at home Mina has returned to Texas Tech at Lubbock to teach in the Home Economics department
In spite of threatening weather the Stamford High School band opened a summer concert series at Govan Park Monday night. The program drew a number of attendees and plans call for concerts each Monday night through the summer.
Fort Worth will be honored as Fort Worth Day on July 3 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion. The designation comes in a letter to Mrs. Steve Bennett, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, from Charles G. Cotten, manager of the Fort Worth Chamber Trade Extension Department. A large Fort Worth delegation is expected to attend, with Miss Margaret Hall of Casa Manana confirming she will attend and likely bring a group.
The nationwide P G and E contest awards sixty refrigerators weekly and has already given many prizes. Roy Duke of Duke Appliance Co says about 180 refrigerators have been won nationwide with daily twelve prizes in a period from May 22 to July 2. Stamford residents joined a Fort Griffin fandangle in Albany last Friday night enjoying a gay and entertaining show. The Stamford group featured Mr. and Mrs. Steve Bennett and many other couples including Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Gray and Dr. and Mrs. Wade Youngblood.
A group of Stamford women rode in the Spur Round-up parade last Friday. Mrs. Bill Maddox served as Stamford's sponsor for the affair. Other riders included Mrs. Bryant, Miss Rosenwaster, Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Crow, Mrs. Charispam, Mrs. Jack Jr., and Misses Stell, Elliott, and Carothers.
An 18 year old Stamford girl was arrested and held in Anson Jail on murder charges after the body of a baby was found near Stamford Gin Company. She told deputies the infant was dead from birth and described how she hid the body in a five gallon can.
Mrs S J Hodge and her husband will travel to Big Spring where she serves Stamford’s sponsor at the Big Spring Rodeo and Cowboy Reunion. She will ride her horse Sweet Chocolate in a white outfit and compete for prizes including a $135 saddle. Sponsors contests are Sunday at 9 30 with social events and a chuck wagon breakfast hosted by the Roden Widows.
Duncan Hines of Bowling Green, author of Good Places to Eat, is pursuing the correct name and address of Mrs. L. D. Cooper's hotel in Stamford. Hugh Coldwell, Wichita insurer who settled the fire claim on the former Cooper Hotel on South Ferguson, recommends the Stamford site known as the one where Wag worked and recalls William Waggoner, who has since died.
Mr and Mrs J H Kinney and family have moved into a newly remodelled duplex on East Hamilton street. The white house with black roof features six rooms a hall bath and several large closets. Interior updates include new plumbing ivory woodwork Venetian blinds and re papered rooms in coordinated shades.
Veteran Texas cowhands who rode range for 35 years gather in Stamford for the tenth annual Texas Cowboy Reunion. Local members listed include L. E. Adams, C. R. Allen, W. W. Allen, G. W. Anglin, F. Baize, Guy Bates, A. W. Bean, J. M. Benton, P. R. Bettis, and many others from Stamford and Avoca. The gathering runs July 3 to 5 with participation by widows of deceased members.
C R Allen was appointed judge of the city court at a called city council meeting on Wednesday afternoon. He succeeds David S Bennett who resigned effective Tuesday night. Allen, formerly with the Wichita Valley railroad, retires from the office to avoid interference with his distribution duties for the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Stamford Camp Fire girls plan attendance at two camps this season. Doris Rosenwasser is registered for Camp El Tesoro in Fort Worth, session starting July 16. Eight girls, including Martha Jo Baird and Mary Sue Humphrey, will attend Camp Letol near Ardmore, beginning July 9, with Rotary and Exchange Club offering transportation.
Stamford faces high demand for lodging during the Texas Cowboy Reunion as crowds swell. Chamber of Commerce secretary Steve Bennett appeals residents to offer rooms for visiting guests to accommodate the influx and boost local spending.
Enrollment at Encampment 210 reached 210 Thursday morning as Dr. Porter M. Bailes of Tyler preached on Pentecostal Power. About 500 to 700 area residents are expected for Sunday services with Judge E. S. Cummins directing. Denominational leaders and camp officials from Abilene, Stamford, Graham, and Nashville oversee daily worship, music, and programs through the encampment period.
Parade entries for the Cowboy Reunion opening July 3 are being received at the Chamber of Commerce office by secretary Steve Hennett. All entries must be registered to be eligible for a prize. Parade chairman W. B. Tayman is at the Rotary International convention and will not return to Stamford until July 1.
St Pauls Lutheran Ladies Aid met in the church with Rev A H Murchbrad in charge. The group planned re papering two rooms in the parsonage and scheduled a called meeting for July 6 at 2 PM to prepare for the Lubbock Federation Luther Leagues Convention on July 29 and 30. A charity box for Round Rock Orphanage was prepared.
Mrs J D Smith stepmother of J A Smith of this city died last Friday at a Graford home. Funeral held Saturday. She was 74 and had been ill for some time.

Weather delays due to mud hindered some new locations while operators report multiple completions and ongoing drilling, with several Palo Pinto lime and saturation zones reaching pay and cementing underway.
Dr. John L. Hill of Nashville, Teor, addressed Stamford Rotary Club at noon Tuesday on the theme Cut Your Roses. A past Rotary International district governor and book editor, Hill drew a gardener’s parable about giving away roses, urging roses of truth courage and loyalty.
The American Legion Pond directed by M. Watson will present a concert at Harmon Park Friday evening. The public is invited to attend.

Exchange Club members will nominate officers at Friday’s Stamford Inn meeting. Roy Arnedge, president, named Jerady Bowery, W. Leavitt, and W. G. Swenson to the nominating committee, with report due and election on June 30. Arnedge also became sponsor of the Weekeha Camp Fire group with Vera Steely as guardian. The club will provide two caravans to take Camp Fire to camp on July.
Miss Ethel Rewell of Stamford High School and Miss Jadys Martin county home demonstration agent will attend the National Home Economists Association meeting in San Antonio late this week. High school and college home economics teachers and home demonstration agents may attend. it is the first time the national group has met in Texas.
