Anson man Jack Nolan, 27, died after a river dive accident near Stamford while employed by West Texas Utilities. The Texa s Cowboy Reunion at Stamford July 1 3 includes a junior cowboy contest for under 12 with saddle prize and chaps second prize, as organizers expand the program.
J G Cowan prominent Jones county farmer died unexpectedly at his home near Lueders on Sunday morning and was buried Monday in Funston cemetery. Born in Belton in 1877 he married Willie Knight at Killeen and later settled in this region. Survivors include his widow four sons a daughter a sister and a step brother with several pallbearers and girls assisting at the burial services.
The list records subscriptions paid recently to Ameryan. Names include Stamford entries such as Joharen Erdman Buie Cunʼdiff Jimmie Muchistein Cunʼdiff Piison and other places like Avoca Sweetwater and Oklahoma City.
Construction at Stamford Sanitarium is about half finished as the roof goes on three units. Brick work will be completed this week and progress should speed after the roof is on due to less weather exposure. Interior finishing and installations remain, with occupancy possible by early August.
S. H. Lowrie of Sao Paulo Brazil will join his wife and two children in Stamford later this week or early next week. He serves as foreign advisor to Sao Paulo's department of social service and will travel from New York and Washington DC after meetings with US officials and foundation leaders. He plans to stay in Texas until July 17 before sailing from New Orleans to continue work in Brazil. The family will remain in the United States and the children will attend local schools.
Governors Clyde Tingley of New Mexico Carl E Bailey of Arkansas Alfred of Texas R B Stanford of Arizona Richard W Leche of Louisiana and E W Marland of Oklahoma will join the Texas Cowboy Reunion July 1 2 and 3 in Stamford. Other invited leaders include C V Terrell of the Texas Railroad Commission and Walt Cousins of Dallas.
Virginia K. Guess 15 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs W B Guess of Weinert died unexpectedly while playing in the yard at the family home Thursday of last week. Funeral held Friday at 2 pm in Roberts community with Rev I N Duff officiating. Buried Roberts cemetery. Kinney Funeral Home directed. Survivors include parents a sister Sue and grandparents.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion adds a new lighting system touted as the best outdoor rodeo lighting after Madison Square Garden. Engineer A Largent of West Texas Utilities says 26 lamps totaling 49 kilowatts will illuminate the arena with uniform light, minus shadows, in time for early tests next Monday or Tuesday night.
Zone 3 Jones County Sunday School workers will meet the Corinth Church Sunday at 2:40 PM. Rev L F Moreland announces the program theme The Need of Vision in Soul Winning with multiple speakers and songs led by Miss Holloway and the Corinth church.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce outlines three goodwill automobile tours to towns across central West Texas to promote the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Routes start June 23 from Stamford with arrivals at Albany Breckenridge Graham Olney Seywee and continue June 24 to Haskell Benjamin Crowell Paducah Matador Spur Jayton Anpermont and on June 25 to Hamlin Roby Kotan Post Snyder Sweetwater Abilene and Anson.
Deletta Merle Carlton died at 1 30 Sunday afternoon at the hospital after being born Wednesday at Tuxedo. Norma Earl died six hours after birth. A simple service was held at the family home with J H Skiles officiating. Burial followed at Fairview cemetery near the grave of the other child. Kinney Funeral Home directed the services. Survivors include the parents a brother John and grandparents J J Cosby Hamlin W Carlton Tuxedo.
Grain men estimate about 80 percent of Stamford's harvest is done with roughly 160 000 bushels handled and about ninety carloads shipped. Rain Wednesday slows harvesting briefly but should not alter overall yield as fields yield 15 to 20 bushels per acre, some 20 to 30 in places.
The Jones County Baptist Association wrapped up its meeting at First Baptist Church with testimonies from about 35 to 40 people and a special prayer for the upcoming Texas Baptist evangelistic campaign. Dr. E. B. Atwood of Hardin-Simmons spoke, joined by Rev. William Williams Doyle and others.
A cadre from the West Texas Chamber of Commerce led by A. D. Bandeen and J. A. Rix along with Mrs. C. S. Cooper from Stamford offices are in Fort Worth to assemble the West Texas exhibit for the Fiesta. Stamford is among about 150 cities with displays. the WTCC building drew 700000 visitors last year and organizers expect even larger crowds for West Texas, Old and New.
L C Dennis, formerly of Bogota, arrives to lead the Barrow Furniture Store and Barrow Funeral Home succeeding D B Baum who departs July 1 for Mineral Wells. Dennis is a licensed embalmer and funeral director. his wife and 5 year old daughter Dorothy Regina join him. Mrs Dennis is also a licensed embalmer and graduate nurse. Vancil Wren joins from Weatherford to replace Neil Carlock, who joins Mr Baum’s Mineral Wells venture. Lula Witherspoon becomes bookkeeper and Dan Rinn remains sales clerk.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Boyette Jr. of Dallas visited the Duncan family in Dallas on Sunday, spending time with J. B. Duncan and his wife. Other visitors included the Waltons of Abilene, Ralph Duncan of Haskell, and multiple Duncan family members from Stamfora, all gathering for a reunion.
A class of young women will be enrolled as probationers at the Stamford School of Nursing on Monday June 21, announced Misa Maud Coote superintendent. Rhodes Bates 16 year old newspaper carrier drowned last Friday on the Clear Fork of the Brazos near Fort Griffin after falling from a cottonwood log into swift water. He was among 12 boys rewarded for selling papers by David S. Bennett. Rescue efforts by Douglas Overton and others failed. inquest ruled accidental drowning. Funeral held Monday at Pirat Capital Church with burial in Highland cemetery. Rhodes was born December 18 1920 in Oklahoma and moved to Stamford in 1928. He had been a carrier since age nine and survived by his mother, brother, and sister.

Interstate Circuit and Texas Consolidated Theaters Inc announced that bank night awards were discontinued in 120 Texas theaters. The action follows a state court of appeals ruling in Austin that bank night drawings were lotteries.
