Stamford civic and church figure Ted Myers died unexpectedly of a heart attack Saturday at 2 a.m. in Dallas. Stamford residents were startled by the sudden news as the family traveled to Dallas.
The Stamford Rotary Club held a memorial for Ted Myers president elect who died. Tributes described him as the southern gentleman and active in local civic life. The service at St. John’s Methodist included remarks by Cleburne Huston and Bob Hall with the choir singing My God and I. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery and Kinney Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Ministers from the Stamford district gather Monday at 10 a.m. for the annual set up meeting presided by Rev. Marshall Rhew. Wives join for a picnic and business session includes a financial request and district parsonage plans. Seven new preachers introduced and lunch for undergraduates and new pastors follows. Mrs Holly Toler and Mrs Carl Marrett spoke after the meal about their Japan trip and Dr William Bray of Chensie Gakuin University.
Move to Abilene places A. J. McDonald as manager of Western Vending Company. He, his wife Marie nee Jackson, and children Jackie and Gaylynn relocated to 1509 Woodard Street last week in Abilene.
Mrs. BE. W. Turner returns to her Little Rock home in Arkansas after visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wright.
Adult leaders for the Metho dist Intermediate camp will meet in Stamford Friday at 2 30 p m for special training in connection with the camp at Ceta Canyon from June 27 to July 1 Rev Wade Griffin pastor of the First Methodist Church of Albany will be camp director and lead the training period.
Fred Selby suffered second degree burns on both arms when cleaning with gasoline ignited a fire at his Wood's Service Station apartment in Stamford. A 15 gallon tank ruptured but prevented an explosion. damage exceeded $1,000 to the house and over $36 to contents. Selby treated at Stamford Sanitarium. another apartment had smoke damage.
John B. Griffin of Dallas was elected president of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security at its 42nd annual meeting in Cincinnati. Griffin, Texa s Employment Commission Dallas office manager and Stamford native, succeeds R. P. Hartley. Robert C. Goodwin, director of the Bureau of Employment Security, spoke at the closing session.
The Stamford Church of Christ announces a June 2024 Vacation Bible School led by Silas Triplett. Daily schedule includes an assembly, two 30 minute class periods with a 15 minute intermission and refreshments. Classes run 9 15 to 9 45 a m and 10 to 10 30 a m with activities for all ages. An adult Personal Evangelism class and an open house Friday June 24 at 8 p m are planned.
The Pierian Club increases its clubhouse building fund by 823 after diverting district and state honor ash awards and treasury allotments. Contributions include a S10 Texas Heritage essay award for Phantom written by Mrs Das Walker and other honors to Mrs Raymond Astin Mrs Dave Walker and Mrs L W Larson.
Five babies born Saturday June 11 at Stamford Sanitarium. Beverly Ann McCorkle and Velda Yvonne Hotgton girls weigh six pounds eight and a fourth ounces and six pounds respectively. Gerald Wayne Olson eight pounds one half ounce. child of Ruby Baitz. James Brandon and Robert Joe Hickman boys born to Hamlin and Stamford families. weights noted.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce Athletic committee plans the Small Fry fishing tourney on June 20 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at College Lake. Participants aged 6 to 12 must submit applications, with four classes and prizes displayed at Bryant Link hardware. Disqualification for wading aims to protect fish. free Coca Colas provided if bottles are returned.
Swan Leonard Edling, 75, a Sweden native and longtime Ericksdahl farmer, died Monday evening at Stamford Sanitarium after three years of ill health. He moved to Ericksdahl with his wife in 1908 from Elgin and was a Bethel Lutheran Church member. Survivors include his wife Bessie, son Roland, daughter Mrs Byron Thompson, sister Mrs C H Kreul, and brother M J Edling. Funeral held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Born April 4, 1880 in Sweden.
Mrs John M Bennett and her children Bob and Martha Susan stay in Denton for the first part of the summer while she undertakes graduate work at Terrs State College for Women. Mr Bennett plans to join on weekends. Mrs Bennett teaches at Oliver Street school.
State Senator David Ratliff returned home with his wife and children Lynnera Janie and John after the Texas Legislature adjourned. The family traveled to Dallas in the latter part of last week.
Community leaders launch a letter solicitation to fund and renovate the Doghouse Youth Center. The project, begun by the Stamard Rotary in 1945, operates Fridays and Saturdays with 125 to 170 youths nightly. money will cover operations, furniture, and materials.
James Thompson, home from Hardin-Simmons University for the summer, works at Aer ial Sprayers, Inc. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Thompson.
Sagerton farmer Louis Havemann aged 58 or 59 died Monday at 1 30 p m in Haskell hospital after a seven month illness. Funeral Tuesday 2 30 p m at Gauntt Funeral Home chapel Rule Rev Rudy Wendel pastor St Pauls Lutheran Sagerton. Burial Tanner Paint cemetery near Sagerton. He was born May 17 1887 in Germany and came to the U S at age five. He lived in Sagerton since 1908 and was a bachelor. Survivors include two sisters-in-law Mrs Fritz Havemann of Haskell and several nieces and nephews.
Charles Coody, a Stamford standout and 195? graduate of Stamford High School, swept to victory in the Anson golf tournament. Mr and Mrs L R Rose were in Dallas last weekend for a routine checkup after recent surgery. they report steady progress.
Joe and Nena Moreno, children of Mr and Mrs Joe B Moreno Sr of Stamford, become the first sibling pair to graduate Stamford High. Nena is the first Latino American girl graduate. Joe is the second Latin American boy. Nena led in bands and clubs. Joe played multiple sports and served as manager. Both undecided on college paths for fall.
Intermittent showers and strong winds swept the area with electrical disturbances. Rain totals ranged from .25 to .41 inches, with heavier hail in Tuxedo area ten miles west of Stamford. Maize damaged by hail. cotton likely to need replanting. Hemlin and Anson recorded varied rainfall.
Dr. Don Gould a Hamlin chiropractor for about 15 years died Thursday at 11 55 a m at the Veterans Hospital in Temple. Funeral was Saturday at 230 p m at St John s Methodist Church with Rev W A Appling and Rev Charles E Fike officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. Gould born April 1 1925 at Waxahachie grew up in Stamford and studied at Arlington State College and Palmer Chiropractic College. He married Emma Baker and leaves two daughters Brenda Kay and Gloria Elaine, plus a large extended family.
Irene Stewart left Monday for Delta Canyon Methodist camp for a planning training conference on District and Sub-District Methodist youth work. She attends as staff to help conduct the conference, which opens Tuesday and runs through Saturday.
