The Stamford Steers defeated Munday 9 to 7 after collecting 18 hits amid windy sandstorm conditions. Beatty led with a strong performance including a home run while Loran and Beatty contributed multiple hits as Stamford ties Hamlin for the lead in the Wichita Valley League and eliminates Munday from the race.
Hamlin defeats Stamford 2 to 1 to seize a one game lead in the Wichita Valley League first half. Lefty Hambright pitched four scattered hits with no walks as Hamlin capitalized on Stamford errors to score in the second and seventh innings. Stamford failed to convert opportunities, leaving three men in scoring position before the ninth.
Mrs. J. G. Heald details a home wardrobe project for the Anderson Chapel Home Demonstration Club, remodeling her closet with repurposed wall paper, shelves, hat racks, lighter rods, and a small electric light. Her effort inspired family changes and drew thirty visitors. Rev. C. R. Hooton urged service over burnout at Stamford Rotary Memorial Day observance. Memorial program honors deceased Rotary members with songs, violins, piano, and Taps.
The Young People’s Class of the Church of Christ is growing in membership with strong interest in the work. A debate on “Sprinkling Can be Substituted for Baptism” featured Alfred Lieb as affirmative speaker and Pauline Bennett as negative speaker. Louis Meyer used Firestone tires in his winning car at Indianapolis for the 500 mile race. It marked the 14th consecutive year a Firestone tire equipped car won. The winner also used Perfect Circle rings, per Firestone dealer D E Precit. He aims to exhibit one tire at the Texas Cowboy Reunion next month.
Mr and Mrs Earl Harrison and their children have moved to Dimmitt where he will work at a grain elevator. They plan to return here next fall. C O Loussignant is now bookkeeper for the Penick Hughes Company filling the former Harrison position.
Sunday sermon at the Church of Christ warned against unconscious drifting away from faith. H W Wrye cited Hebrews and urged clinging to Christ as life line, noting the world’s tug, the Edenic sin, and the costly pardon through Jesus.
Dr. C. C. Shell aged 90 is the sole Confederate Veteran at Stamford's Rotary Club Memorial Day program. Joe Burcham, the other veteran from the era, is ill and could not attend. S. H. Hunter remains at the Confederate Home in Austin after prior visits.
Mrs. Metz's father died early Wednesday at his Nashville home after a long illness. Mrs. Metz had left last week to visit him, and the family mourns his passing.
The Indoor Baseball League featuring the Red Shirts Business Men Millers and Utilities begins Monday night under lights. Preseason games pit Red Shirts vs Business Men and Millers vs Utilities with coaches Bill Gay Ira Samuels Pete West and C B Waggoner. League president Ralph King says ground rules remain the same and no controversy is expected as each game is highly contested.
Funeral services for John Fulbright of Sagerton were held Wednesday at 2 pm at the Kiuneral Home with Rev. E A. I and Rev. C R. Hooton officiating. Burial followed in Bland Cemetery. He moved to Haskell county in 1907 and was active in West Texas development. Survived by wife, five children, mother, a sister, and three brothers.
Shirley Lees 21 of Haskell sustained a fractured skull a broken shoulder and slight lacerations after a car crash near the Presbyterian Church in Haskell Saturday at 7 15 p m He was driven to Stamford Sanitarium in the Kinney ambulance with Earl West and Al Miller In the crash Lees and West were pinned under the Ford roadster West later released with bruises and minor lacerations Miller remained uninjured.
Simple ceremonies in tribute to the war dead on Memorial Day were held by the American Legion. A parade including the Stamford Band Guardsmen from Company K 142nd Infantry Legionnaires and Legion Auxiliary members formed at the City Auditorium at 10 a m. It moved around the square to the Legion Hall where Rev Sam Morris gave the memorial address.
The Bethany quartet from Bethany Peniel College will lead a Friday evening eight o'clock program at the Nazarene Church 600 N Swenson. The notice invites all to Sunday school at 9 45 preaching at 11 and a Junior Missionary Society program Sunday 8 p m with a Thursday prayer meeting at 8 p m.
Stamford Public Schools list pupils with perfect attendance for 1932-33 and those awarded Scholarship Cards. Perfect attendance includes Freda Culwell and Betty Gray among others. Scholarship A cards go to top year grades, while Scholarship B cards honor those with 85 percent or higher yearly averages, listing numerous named recipients across grades.
Dr Atticus Webb head of the Anti-Saloon League in Texas told a St Johns Methodist Church audience that voting to license liquor makes a voter a party to crime even if no law exists He urged business leaders and mothers to oppose liquor and defend prohibition ahead of the August 26 election.
Honor graduates announced at Stamford High School commencement at St. Johns Church. Valedictorian Miss Willie Cleone White earned 94.70 average, salutatorian Miss Pe Elliott 94.43. Bernice Rosenwasser named best all round senior. Grades highlight top eighth, ninth, and tenth graders. About 1,000 attended. N S Holland delivered address on Something to Talk About. Sixty two diplomas were awarded.
More than twenty girls compete for the title Miss Stamford in a Bathing Revue and Style Show at the Alcove Theatre on Thursday and Friday. The winner earns a free trip to the Queen of the West Pageant in Roswell, New Mexico, then a chance at a World’s Fair trip in Chicago. A Tiny Tots Revue for ages one to six follows on Friday night. mothers may call the box office to enter.
More than one hundred Stamford residents welcomed sixty DeLeon school pupils arriving by Katy train for a round trip excursion sponsored by R. L. Scott editor of the DeLeon Free Press. Mrs Scott and two teachers accompanied them with M. B. Schaefer of the M E T rail road. Ice cream and sodas were served en route. After a 20 minute visit the visitors returned home later that afternoon.
Charles Goven of Concord New Hampshire sues for divorce claiming his wife fell in love with a meat delivery man who served her cats.
The United Charities meeting at the Central Christian Church reviewed clothing, budget, and medical supply reports. Officers thanked donors and urged a public drive, noting $581 spent, $200 set aside for vaccines, and calls for continued local relief via churches and the Community Chest.
Funeral service for Mrs. Belle Haskew 68 died at her daughter Eula Haskew's Brownwood home after a decade illness. Service conducted by Rev. C. R. Hooton at her brother Charles Wason's East Moran residence. Burial in Highland cemetery.
