Convicted murderer seeks second appeal to set aside 1953 sentence

Curtis Dean Corley, convicted February 3 1953 in 104th District Court for killing Ed McKennon in an Anson motel, files a habeas corpus appeal claiming ineffective assistance of counsel, unlawful jury selection, and improper cross section. He was previously denied appeal in 1968 and later returned to Huntsville from Michigan after that denial.

Deadline Nears for Entries in Jones County Fair

The Jones County Fair urges livestock entrants to file by August 8 as secretary Kirby Clayton notes all livestock entries and fees are due. Willie Holloway says late entries are not accepted and ribbons and prize money depend on timely submissions. The show runs August 22 with a horse show August 23, while a talent show August 21 is planned and Cotton Queen entries are sponsored by local businesses.

Ericksdahl Gin Plans Capacity Increase After Meeting

Patrons of Fricksdahl Cooperative Gin split 49922 in dividends at their annual meeting in Bethel Lutheran Church basement. The gin ginned 5502 bales last season. About 400 attendees enjoyed an evening meal in the church picnic area. Lambert Stenholm presided as president. directors elected for two years were Stenholm Olson and Swenson. Nelson named manager for his 31st year.

Library use soars at Carnegie building in town

Mrs Russell Crownover told Rotary Club members that interest in the Carnegie Library has surged with 70 to 75 books checked out daily. The 1909 gift now holds over 5,000 volumes, 255 phonograph records and 25 periodicals, plus access to rentals and state loans. The city remodeled in 1961 and a new board in 1962 revived the library, now staffed by one full time and one part time employee.

Lowell Longley manager of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce is in Fort Worth this week attending a Council of Chamber of Commerce managers institute at Texas Christian University. He plans to return Saturday.

Citizens Rejoice In Moon Walk by Armstrong Aldrin Collins

Stamford residents and the world watched as Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin walked on the moon while Michael Collins orbited above. The Eagle rejoined Columbia and the astronauts prepared to return to Earth on Thursday. Flags flew and the post office closed Monday in celebration.

Farmers to Visit Test Plots In Field Day Trip Tuesday

Jones County hosts the Annual Farmers Field Day on Tuesday July 29 starting at 7 am led by County Agent Kirby Clayton. Attendees tour at multiple farms near Anson Nevada and Funston with grain sorghum variety tests 16 varieties per plot and fertility demonstrations across cotton and sorghum with 12 rates each, plus a pre-emergence weed control demo. Prizes go to farmers guessing top yielding varieties.

Formal opening of Stamford Memorial Hospital tentatively set for August 10 announced by administrator John Martin. The 16 acre Avoca Highway site includes a future nearby clinic by Stamford physicians. Construction costs surpassed 1.25 million funded by bonds 750,000 grants 500,000 Hill Burton allocation and private donations.

Rains Return To State but Skip Stamford

Rains came back to Texas this week but Stamford saw little rain while Rockdale reported 0.3 inch Sunday afternoon and Stamford only a trace Monday. Abilene received two inches Tuesday afternoon while Lubbock faced rain and winds. Cooler air kept temperatures below 100 degrees as scattered showers continue. Harvest of maize begins with grain described as shriveled, and cotton holds up though would benefit from rain. City water use dips as City Manager Kerry Sweatt notes a record daily pump of 2.4 million gallons last week.

David Palmer to Speak at Stamford Revival

Rev. David J. Palmer will headline revival services at Stamford Foursquare Gospel Church starting July 23. Rep. Frank Calhoun of Abi lene, Texas, spoke to Lions Club members about nine proposed constitutional amendments. He urged Texans to vote favorably on the water proposal. Introduced by Bill Longley, the meeting also noted the club picnic set for Aug. 12 at the Stamford Cotton Oil Co. cabin by Lake Stamford.
