School Opens September 2 Under One Diploma Plan
The school board set Monday September 2 as opening day with registration at that time and a calendar like last year. The one diploma plan will replace multiple diplomas and the transcript will show completed subjects. Two teachers resigned and a fifth Washington school position was created to maintain accreditation. Integration at the high school will not be pursued due to 55th legislature actions. A special meeting August 22 will adopt the 1957 58 budget.

Explorer Scouts Plan Canoe Trip Into Canada
Stamford Explorer scouts led by Dr Tom Thunites and Dr Cromwell depart Friday for a canoe expedition into Canada. They aim to return by August 4 after July 2 through August 1 in the Quetlcn Nations Park wilderness area with ten boys including two from Athene. The trip follows a Kansas City baseball game and proceeds to Summers base camp in Minnesota before crossing into Canada three miles from the nearest settlement.

R L L Criswell Dies After Horse Incident at Hereford
R L L Criswell longtime SMS foreman who lived at Throckmorton and later Hereford died July 5 after head injury from a horse fall. He carried the U S flag for years at Texas Cowboy Reunion and retired in 1953 because of health. He survived by wife two sons and two daughters. Floyd Brigham had a serious operation at VA hospital in Big Spring and is slowly improving with Mrs Brigham by his side.
