Stamford city council discussed a possible increase in trash pickup frequency. No ordinance was approved pending further study with state guidance favoring residential service twice weekly and smaller 32 gallon cans to speed routes. Only one active collection truck is used while downtown service remains daily and residents pay a $1 monthly fee with water charges.
Stamford city officials emphasize a year round grass watering rate with 5 cent water all year. The schedule charges 2.00 for 3,000 gallons, 38 cents per thousand for the next 5,000, 32 cents per thousand for the next 5,000, and 25 cents per thousand thereafter.
John Oscar Mitchell 88 died Saturday of pneumonia at Stamford Memorial Hospital. Born October 25, 1873 in Mississippi, he moved to Stamford in 1913 from Falls County. He was a Foursquare Gospel Church member. Funeral 4 p.m. Sunday at Kinney Chapel with Sister Katherine Byrd officiating. Burial Highland Memorial under Kinney. Survivors include four sons Homer Andrews Jack Los Angeles Gene Atwell. three daughters Bernice Jones Lubbock Hattie Mae Young Wylie Huth Mitchell Los Angeles. many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers were A. L. Whitworth Morgan Rhodes G. Ro Corby George Boring Kenneth Boring Tony Byrd.
Eric Grigoleit longtime Oilfield Ignition Co. owner in Stamford leaves Veterans Administration hospital and goes home. Mrs Crivoleit thanks Stamford residents and praises Lee Walker for prayers and kindness during his illness.
Chief B Q Cooper reports busier reunion celebration with more arrests than last year. Twenty five drunkenness arrests noted along with several family disputes and numerous traffic tickets. Hub caps were recovered from VFW hall thefts but culprits remain at large.
Estes investigation focus centers on Billy Sol Estes. Davenport B P Davenport Jr of Stamford testified in Washington before the Senate Investigating Committee. He previously served as state chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee and is expected to return home with spouse this weekend.
Two building permits have been issued since the first of the month, one for a residence and one for a storage building. Paul Griggs will build a house at 1413 Compton Street, 32 by 70 feet, costing $14,000 with plumbing by Corby and electrical work by Davis. General Welding Works is constructing a metal storage shed for Farmers Coop Gin near the gin at 110 West Gould, sized 30 by 48 feet.
Roy Smith of Haskell employed by Leo Dodson was wounded when he fell on a stake and was cut above the right ear. He was transported to the hospital by an ambulance from Kinney Funeral Home.
More than 9 000 members of the 36th Infantry Division endure sweltering Kisatchie Forest heat while completing 24 hour field training at Fort Polk and surrounding areas. Second Battle Group 42nd Infantry units from Abilene Snyder Stamford and other Texas towns pursue rugged tests though morale remains high under Col. James Moreland. Troops begin homeward trips around July 14 with buses and truck convoys leaving the reservation.
B R Sallie Webb Stamford rancher died Wednesday at 4 10 am at Haskell General Hospital on his 69th birthday. Funeral at 10 am Friday from 506 S Orient St with burial in Willow Cemetery. Survived by wife Gladys Bettis Webb son Tommy of El Paso two granddaughters two sisters and two brothers.
The city council filled two vacancies on zoning related boards on Friday. Oliver Smith joined the Zoning Commission replacing Dr. FERP who had died. Bunkley H G Andrews Jr. was appointed to the Zoning Board of Adjustment succeeding Hubert Watson whose death created the vacancy.
The city council asked the state highway department to install a small sign on stop lights reading Right Turn on Red After Stop to help speed traffic flow in town.
Avoca Church schedules a week long revival from July 15 to 22 with daily services at 10:00 am and 8:00 pm and evening prayer groups at 7:30. The Rev. Darris L. Egger of Colorado City First Methodist will lead. homecoming Sunday kicks off events. Rev. Howard Quiett invites all to attend and join a luncheon after the Sunday service.
The Jones County unit of the American Cancer Society will hold its annual membership meeting Thursday July 12 at 7 30 in the First Methodist Church fellowship hall. Noel Weaver of Hamlin will preside. Lynn Crawford of Abilene will arrange the program and guest speaker. Members will elect new officers and committees and delegates to the area meeting in Abilene.
Boll weevils build up in the southern part of Jones County along river bottom and shinnery areas. Farmers in Hawley Nugent Truby Hodges and Noodle urged to check cotton and apply insecticides. Five field meetings set for July 23 at Hawley Hodges Noodle Ericksdahl Plainview and Thackerson Store with entomologist John Thomas assisting.
Engineers from Freese Nichols and Endress surveyed Stamford streets for voluntary paving under a bond funded program. If two thirds of blocks in an area agree, paving proceeds with the city paying engineering and curb costs while owners cover one third of pavement and their curb and gutter. Liens and five year financing possible.
Stamford Jaycees hold a two day sale offering installed seat belts at 36.95. Installations take about a half hour on the lot next to United Food Store at the southeast square corner. Hours are Saturday all day and Sunday afternoon.
Workmen paint the vocational agriculture shop the homemaking building and trim at Avoca School. Central forced air heating replaces old room heaters. superintendent James E. Connel says the 13 extra daily attendance last year will boost state funding. No faculty changes planned.
During June 17 to 28 Troop 42 and Troop 47 from Stamford sent eight boys to Camp Tonkawa. Scouts earned merit badges and ranks including first class and second class, with successes in camping, swimming, Morse code, and a five mile hike. Both troops received the Good Camping award for neat campsites. Troop 42 is sponsored by First Baptist Church and Troop 47 by Trinity Baptist Church.
Stamford city council granted permission last week for HH Corley to operate a domino hall in the 600 block of West McHarg Street. The action confirms authorization for the new leisure venue in the city core.
A $25 reward is offered by the Chamber of Commerce athletic committee for information leading to the arrest of vandals who damaged Wendeborn Field by shooting out 10 lights over the weekend. Contact the Chamber of Commerce office at PR 32411.
Mrs. W. L. Goodwin 85 died Monday at her home in GOL Texas after five months ill health. Services were at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Anson with Rev J B Chick and Rev Norris Onstead officiating. Burial followed at Mt Hope Cemetery. She was born December 17 1876 in Alabama and moved to Texas as a child. Survived by five sons two daughters four stepdaughters one sister 32 grandchildren 58 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Taxpayers in Stam ford County Line Independent School District received notices to attend a board of equalization meeting. The district approved a 425 percent valuation increase to fund next year operations and reduced the tax rate from 1.50 to 1.30 per hundred dollars. The equalization board will meet July 24 in the school tax office in the old city auditorium space once used by the chamber of commerce.
Stamford firefighters responded to five alarms in the first five days of July after a quiet June. Alarms included grass and trash fires southeast of town and on Columbia Street. A washing machine motor at A C Denson on East Campbell sparked a grass blaze, and a fire at West Vanderbilt involved cross ties and a fence.
The Washington school in Stamford will not start the fall term early as in past years. Upon the principal C. D. Gide nings recommendation the term will coincide with the rest of the school system. The negro school used to open early and then shut down so pupils could help in the cotton harvest.
City Manager Har ry Steenson reports Stamford’s water consumption for the 30 day period ending June 20 fell by more than three and a half million gallons from last year and eight million gallons from 1960. Peak use runs June 20 to July 20. the all time high was 30,607,800 gallons in 1960, with 16,424,900 gallons recorded during the same period in 1961. A table shows three year totals for April 20 to Aug 20 across 1960 to 1962.
