The ae Building and Loan Association forms and schedules a bond election for Monday to authorize 135000 in bond issues for street paving water extensions and sewerage improvements. The prior vote failed due to a ballot error despite a near six to one approval.
The Lueders Baptist Encampment launches a comprehensive new recreation program led by Miss Mary Esther Cheshier of Fort Worth. The schedule spans Tuesday to Thursday with opening meetings, swimming, leadership classes, tournaments in volleyball and tennis, nature talks, mission education, and evening gatherings at the Tabernacle and Pavilion.
The West Texas Utilities cooking school begins at the city auditorium with Mrs. Stella Floyd conducting daily sessions from 5 to 9, continuing through Thursday. Attendees include Mrs. J. Kendrick and Mrs. Stockton visiting from Oklahoma, joining Judge and Mrs. Thomas for a community event full of games, music, and outdoor activities.
Regular services will be held at the First Baptist church Sunday morning with Sunday school and preaching at usual hours. Evening services are canceled due to the Baptist Encampment at Lueders. The encampment ends July 22 and all church services will resume the following Sunday. Rev. W. C. Moffett notes workers should attend or provide substitutes. Two new members joined last Sunday by profession of faith and baptism.
Woodmen Circle members led by Mrs. Tressie Goldsticker and the Texas Red Coats returned from Estes Park where they attended a field workers conference and impressed 200 attendees with a Lone Star flag drill and spirited performances. The group competed against Ardmore Oklahoma and Albuquerque New Mexico staffs with strong support from Texas members. The team demonstrated precision and camaraderie, earning praise and a chance to contest the national championship later.
Will Lt Myatt of Nugent was found guilty of murdering J B Saunders and sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary by a district court jury in Anson. The three day trial ended at 4 p m Sunday after the jury deliberated since midnight Saturday. Attorneys for Myatt said they would appeal to overturn the verdict.
HB Langworthy and home economics experts plan a free cooking carnival at the Stamford and Western Gas Company office on the east side of the square. The event runs Thursday to Saturday with daily demos from 2 to 4 PM and 7 30 to 9 PM. J Leo Jolley, appliance department manager, invites the school and all residents.
The Exchange Club held its regular Friday noon meeting with two readings by Miss Elizabeth Moody and a talk by Rotary member R. B. McDonald. Russell Williams of Hailey Williams Company concluded with a classification talk.
The organizing committee released speaking dates and locations for Jones County candidates. Mr and Mrs Bert Whaley and Bert Jr visited DT J Meads Sunday afternoon. Mrs FE Ht Moore of Balls Texas spent the night with DT J Meade Sunday night. Miss Ovie May was carried to Stamford hospital last week. Mrs GT Miller of Waxahachie visited Wren Jackson last week. Mesdames Tom Harvick Paul Galey and John Braswell visited Ovie May in hospital Saturday afternoon. Mr and Mrs John Braswell were guests of Mr and Mrs Paul Galey Sunday afternoon. Bert Apperson and family Miss Bobbie and Hobby Appling of McLean Tom Ashburn and family J B Ashburn and Dulin Ashburn visited J A Riddle family Sunday afternoon. Mr and Mrs K A Appling and children of McLean have been visiting EF Wo Appling home the past week. Mr and Mrs Elmo Eoff were guests of Mr and Mrs J B England Sunday. Mrs Hodges and Misses Katy Hodges Nellie Apperson and Winifred McAllister and Jim Ashburn left Tuesday to attend encampment at Leaders. R D Jones is on the sick list. Miss Bobbie Appling and Miss Nellie Apperson spent the day with Miss Winifred McAllister Wednesday.
The sixth annual Lueders Baptist Encampment began at the Clear Fork camp near Lueders with unusually large opening day attendance. Dr Millard A Jenkins of Abilene delivered the principal address and will speak twice daily. Dr W T Holcomb of Sherman will be the inspirational speaker in the latter half. Classes started at 9 00 am with about 15 instructors present except one. The encampment runs 19 days ending Sunday July 22.
The Mission Study lesson on The Call of the Red Man drew strong interest at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon. A plan for a dollar social to be held Wednesday at Mrs. B Bryant’s home includes a program with all church women invited and the chance to meet the entire congregation.
Miss Elizabeth Hall formerly of Stamford now in Childress is in Stamford sanitarium with a broken arm after a truck sideswiped a roadster on Monday night. The three passengers were Abi lene to Stamford with Miss Hall riding with her arm extended outside the car. Mrs. C. Stuckey chaperones a girls party at Leeders Encampment including Elizabeth Pratt Sarah Upshaw Margaret Upshaw Lucile Rose and two Colorado friends.
Stamford business leaders organize the Western Building and Loan Association with 5 million dollars capital. J B Smith is named president with A J Swenson and K R Penick as vice presidents and R Thomas as secretary. The board includes H Andrews and other local figures. Smith will devote full time to the venture.
The Workers' Council met Tuesday night with about thirty teachers and officers present. Bradlock presided as superintendent. Miss Mary de Cowser read. musical numbers by the Sunday school orchestra and talks by Revere Pratt and Kevin A. Stewart. The Stamford Fireman's Band will give a concert Friday at Bunkerhill. large crowd expected. Indications show no Chautauqua in Stamford next year. Eva Worden and Gail Potter of Redpath Horner sought contracts but failed to gain enough signatures.
The $85.04 bond issue for Stamford public schools passed by a margin of 114 to 0. The school board will begin the improvement program immediately, including a new grade school on the high school campus, a home economics cottage, a manual training shop, and an addition to the high school. Demolition of the old dormitory will begin soon, with brick used in new buildings.
