Ferguson Rally Set for Stamford July 20 Night

A Ferguson rally is planned in Stamford on the night of July 20 with speakers including Governor M. A. Ferguson supporters Judge J. F. Cunningham of Abilene and others. Cunningham’s speech was postponed due to rain and will take place at the City Auditorium.

Old fiddlers contest draws large crowds at Legion event

The American Legion celebration included an old fiddlers contest with preliminary rounds Monday and Tuesday and finals Wednesday. Winners were Alva Anderson Stamford first Monday, Jack Seaton Stamford second, J M Burleson Rochester third. Tuesday Floyd England Winters first, Anderson second, O S Cutbirth Stamford third. others: N M Nelson Lueders Buck Koonce Hamlin Joe Roberts Stamford. A Charleston dance contest added entertainment.

Rotary Club Installs New Officers in Noon Meeting

A. L. Buster of Stam ford State Bank was installed as president of the Rotary Club at the regular noon luncheon. George E. Pryor, the outgoing president, received a past president’s badge from Bernard Bryant. Burt King and Hamilton Wright were named vice president and secretary respectively, with R. F. Townsend and L. E. Lueders Baptist Encampment Anticipates Record Attendance

Officials expect the fourth annual Lueders Baptist Encampment to draw the largest crowd in the institution’s history as the ten day camp opens next Tuesday. Registration begins Tuesday morning with tent setups starting Monday. Three New Stamford Buildings Get Contracts

Contracts were awarded for three new Stamford buildings last week: Country Club structure to J Dyer of Stamford for 13464.80, a 30 by 60 foot West Texas Chamber of Commerce office to J R Horn & Son of Abilene for about 8000, and an inn annex to extend the Stamford Inn with a two story addition of 12 rooms funded by local subscriptions led by A Claude Forsterling with initial 500 from West Texas Utilities Company.

Oil Found in Bunkley Well East of Stamford

Oil discovery announced at the Bunkley well about 17 miles east of Stamford. Drilling resumed after a cave-in with gas encountered and production figures pending cleaning at around 1600 feet. Reports say oil may have shot over the derrick though suction effects are possible. Prospects brighter than Adams Moody well.

Ring of Tire Thieves Broken Up by Officers

A ring of tire thieves operating in Stamford is believed broken up after two Stamford boys were arrested and several others placed under investigation. Constable J. D. Crow and Deputy Sheriff W. D. Olinger led the detective work, recovering several tires and tubes. Four additional suspects are implicated.

Auto Bus Depot to Open in New East Hamilton Building

A union stage line depot will be set up in a new East Hamilton street building for the Auto Service Company led by manager Dick Rowland. A waiting room and ample parking will serve ten Stamford line cars, with numbers expected to rise this fall. opening is planned about August 1. Owner of the building is C. N. Humphrey.

Rain Drenches Stamford as Chamber Work Advances

About 0.5 inch of rain fell in Stamford around 1 PM Wednesday, boosting crops. A. Cooper, Inn proprietor, leads construction and oversees the West Texas Chamber of Commerce building, now under excavation, after months of effort to secure the project.

Moody Speech Draws Large Stamford Crowd

Dan Moody spoke in Stamford to promote his bid for governor drawing about 1500 seats filled at the municipal auditorium. He attacked Ferguson, claimed the governor rules by proxy, and cited alleged graft and state treasury losses while praising his road contract actions as attorney general.

Stamford Man Wins Abilene Fourth of July Shoot

W. E. Fairless of Stamford won high score at the Abilene Fourth of July shoot with 97x100. Thirty three shooters entered the meet. Next high score was 96x100 by L D Kycrow of Colorado City. Mr and Mrs L J Claypool are visiting relatives in Fort Worth.
