Californian wins two horse show saddles at Texas Cowboy Reunion
Kristi Kussman, of California, won two saddles at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Quarter Horse Shows, taking Open Youth Activity and AQHA Halter and Performance titles with Trouble Call. She claimed Western pleasure first and top finishes in showmanship, horsemanship, and reining to secure the overall prize. Melissa Hargett and Melody Walker also earned top placements as contenders in Rotan and El Centro events.

Oldtimers Honor Dead Amid Rain at Memorial Service
A thunder shower interrupted the memorial services of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association as a 106 degree afternoon met with only a 20 percent chance of rain. A 2 p.m. talk noted that people often complain about the clouds when it rains.

Stamford Chamber elects directors and cites slate for race
Eight Stamford Chamber of Commerce members are named as candidates for three year director terms. Five of seven candidates will be chosen by the full chamber membership with ballots mailed later this month. Current directors with terms expiring this year include Hafer Upshaw Terrell and Mathis, with elections to Oct. 1.

Stamford Art Foundation show yields over $50,000 in sales
Final tabulations were still being compiled Wednesday noon for the fifth Stamford Art Foundation show and sale held during the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Preliminary estimates placed sales at more than $50,000. About 2000 people viewed the John Selmon Memorial Art Gallery featuring 37 artists. More figures will be released later.

West Texas riders win four saddles at 48th Texas Cowboy Reunion
The 48th Texas Cowboy Reunion crowned four saddle winners from Texas and nearby areas. Nancy Anderson of Colorado City captured the barrel racing saddle with 19.163 seconds, James Reed of Breckenridge won calf roping with 34.1 seconds on three calves, Martin Fryar of Big Spring claimed the double mugging saddle with a 55 second three head average, and Morris Sandifer of Manor took the old time ropers saddle with 26.6 seconds two head time. Additional top placers included Eldon White of Bowie and Johnny Burrus, with Stephenville competitors earning shares in bareback and saddle bronc events.

Sweetwater artist earns July chamber honor for art
Sweetwater painter Monde Rogers named Stamford Chamber of Commerce Artist of the Month for July. The self-taught artist, a Texas Tech alumnus, works in egg tempera and dry brush watercolor to capture Southwest light and Western heritage. His work, including ranch buildings series, is on display in the Chamber office all July.
