Lueders-Avoca PTO Volleyball Tournament Friday Night

Record high heat, drought hit Stamford crops hard

The region endures 100 plus degree heat with no relief forecast through Sunday. If temperatures reach 100, Stamford will mark 22 of 23 days above that level and 15 straight such days. Rainfall trails normal, Lake Stamford drops over a foot in a month, while daily water withdrawals exceed three million gallons amid sustained demand. Local crops suffer, especially cotton, with a short harvest expected due to extreme drought and limited rainfall.

Breakfast program to begin in Stamford schools

Beginning this fall breakfast and lunch will be available in Stamford schools. The school board set 10 cents for reduced breakfasts and 40 cents for student and adult breakfasts. Law requires programs in schools with 10 percent or more students eligible for free or reduced meals to begin by 1978-79, with facilities lacking food service by 1981-82. Public hearing on the 1978-79 budget scheduled Aug 3 at 8 p.m. The board accepted two resignations, hired several teachers for 1978-79, and approved financial arrangements including time warrants and a CD for band uniforms.

The Stamford Day Care Center treasurer Rev. Jim Enfield was named chairman replacing C. R. Bellamy who moves to Kerrville. Rev. Bill Weeks joins the board and Alyce Daniel resigns as director with Bethane Wade to become director. Daniel plans to open a private day care here soon.

Cattlemen to Return Surveys for Landsat Range Study

About 4,000 questionnaires were mailed July 3 from College Station to ranch operators in a 110 mile wide Texas band from Childress to Sanderson and Wichita Falls to Del Rio. Harold Chilton leads the Landsat Range Resource Information System Project using three NASA satellites to collect data on range forage and other ranch needs.
