Plans are complete for the annual Old Time Cowboys meeting in Stamford from June 30 to July, reviving a 1930 origin when cowboys gathered at the Chamber of Commerce to inaugurate a reunion and rodeo honoring working and old time cowboys.
Stamford area residents can join an old fashioned street dance tonight from 7 to 11 p.m. on the northwest square corner with the Roadrunners led by Jesse Sanchez and others from Stamford Cisco Abilene and Doyle Daniel. Square dance caller Leon Ivy and a local group will entertain between band sets. Food drinks T shirts and a Coke wagon will be available and no admission fee is charged. The event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade Committee with Fareed Hassen as chair.
Stamford prepares for four nights of rodeo and a busy festival weekend as the 48th annual Texas Cowboy Reunion kicks off with a 4 p.m. Friday grand parade. Senator John Tower, grand marshal, launches a week of events including rodeo, chuckwagon dinners, horse shows, and an art show running through July 4.
Congressional candidate Bill Fisher for the 17th District is due in Stamford on Thursday June 29. He will meet supporters Lynn Gillespie and others and tour the downtown area to meet residents and answer questions. Fisher is also scheduled to appear in the Texas Cowboy Reunion rodeo and parade on Friday June 30.
Dalhart and Sweetwater men will judge three Texas Cowboy Reunion horse shows on Friday and Saturday. The events include open youth activity, youth AQHA and adult AQHA shows with 7 am starts, multiple age groups, and saddle awards for overall champions. Dale Burnett and Tommy Buckner serve as judges, with Buckner noted Dalhart native and longtime Quarter Horse breeder.
The Stamford Art Foundation hosts the fifth annual Western Art Exhibition and Sale to benefit West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Hundreds of western art lovers will view and buy works valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars from 37 top artists across oil, watercolor, and bronze. A special Collectors' Preview Party and Sale at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at the John Selmon Memorial Art Gallery offers first chance to purchase with a chuckwagon meal for 10.
