Three hundred members of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association have paid dues and received badges, with 700 to 800 expected this year. Early registrations show a surge compared with 199 last year, as the oldtime cowboys organize for the rodeo competition.
The Reunion cowboy rodeo promises keen competition with 154 contestants pre entered before opening night. Names listed include Jot McCluskey Throckmorton Jim Maddox Colorado Luther Marr Aspermont Red Hammerschmidt Smithfield Buck Hawkins Denton and others across Texas New Mexico and nearby towns.
The Sixth Annual Texas Cowboy Reunion opens with strong turnout as cowpunchers and cattlemen flood Stamford. Governor James V. Allred plans to attend July 3, arriving by plane at 2:30 p.m. and headlining the grand parade.
Stamford merchants sponsor a second Monday Trades Day featuring a 1:30 p.m. auction by Col. Joe Seale for livestock, implements, autos, and household goods. Merchan dise auction follows with prices cut to one third to half. A $5 battle royal among white boys closes the day at the old trade grounds near First National Bank.
Calf roping for men over 55 drew 18 entrants by Monday night. The list includes Simpson Johnson Guion. Bill Kelton Midland. Ed Scott Post. J A Covington Paducah. R B Lane Stamford. C E Pippen Cisco. Dan Foster Lipan. Bob Browning Snyder. Mat Williams Plains. Ellison Carroll Big Lake. W M Glasscock Quitaque. Lee Bird Snyder. S W Boone Haskell. Junior Steer Riders were also listed with entrants Buss Daniels and Raymond Hudkins and Mrs G H ock Katharine.
Daily program for July 2 to July 4 lists arena events such as calf roping, educated horse exhibition, clown stunts, and grand entries. Includes meetings of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association in City Auditorium Odessa president John M. Gist. parades, dinners, sponsor balls, square dancing and rodeo contests. Prizes awarded for champions with J. O. Spring named president of the Dallas Salsmanship Club. band directed by Dick Rowland.
A new grand stand increases seating by 2000 to a total of 10000 with 8000 under roof and 2000 bleacher seats. Standing room and limited car space remain on one side. If crowds were evenly spread across nine performances over three days, 100000 people could be accommodated.
The annual Texas Cowboy Reunion parade in Stamford will start at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Crowds are expected to pack streets as cowboys and cowgirls ride in the grand procession with wagons floats bands and colorful regalia. Local and visiting bands including Hardin-Simmons and Abilene High School will perform. Pending invitation status for the Joe Meatingook and potential arrival of Governor Allred could affect lineup.
